Walking in a farmers' market often brings one to explore new food options, and now more locally¬farmed protein choices are available to help bridge the gap between our meals and the farms on which they originated. More and more local small farms are popping_up in opposition to factory farms.
Today's commercial farms do not fit the image that comes to mind while happily singing along to “Old McDonald”. Instead, most of the nation's food comes from CAFOs, Confined Animal Feeding Operations, where animals are kept in tightly enclosed conditions as they are fattened up and readied to be killed for food.
Fortunately, knowing exactly where one's food comes from has led to an increase in the availability of what is known as “grass¬fed” beef. Technically, all cattle are grass¬fed for at least a limited amount of time, but what makes the meat significant is that it is grass¬finished, not force¬fed corn, soy or grains. This change in diet makes all the difference since corn is not part of the cow's traditional diet, and therefore causes major health issues for it. To deal with the health issues, antibiotics (抗生素) are used and some of the antibiotics used to treat the cattle are similar to those given to humans, so they can decrease the effectiveness of medicine when a consumer is sick.
A healthier diet for the cattle leads the meat to lower in both fat and calories. And when cooking grass¬fed beef, you'd better use a slightly lower temperature to make it more delicious.
1.The underlined words “popping up” (in the 1st paragraph) probably means ________.
  A.improving           B.fading
  C.profiting             D.appearing

A.animals raised freely on local farms
B.animals kept in tightly enclosed conditions
  C.commercial farms providing fast food
  D.commercial farms providing unpopular foods
根据文章第二段第一句“Today's commercial farms do not fit the image...”

  A.some cattle feed on grains
  B.all cattle diet on grass
C.some medicines are used to treat sick cattle

While waiting to pick up a friend at an airport in Portland, Oregon, I had one of those life¬changing experiences that you hear other people talt—the kind that happens to you unexpectedly. To me, this happened and was only two feet away from me.
Locating my friend among the passengers, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family.
First he walked to his youngest son (maybe 6 years old) as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long, loving hug. As they separated enough to look in each other's face, I heard the father say,“It's so good to see you, son.  I missed you so much!” His son smiled somewhat shyly, and replied softly,“Me, too, Dad!”
Then the man stood up, gazed into the eyes of his oldest son (maybe 9 or 10) and while cupping his son's face in his hands said, “You're already quite a young man. I love you very much, Zach!” They too hugged a most loving, tender hug.
While this was happening, a baby girl (perhaps one or one¬and¬a¬half¬year old) was squirming (扭动) excitedly in her mother's arms, never once taking her little eyes off the wonderful sight of her returning father. The man said,“Hi, baby girl!” as he gently took the child from her mother. He quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest while rocking her from side to side. The little girl instantly relaxed and simply laid her head on his shoulder, motionless in pure contentment.
After several moments, he handed his daughter to his oldest son and declared,“I've saved the best for last!” and went to give his wife the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed into her eyes for several seconds and then silently mouthed, “I love you so much!” They stared into each other's eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands.
For an instant they reminded me of newly¬weds, but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn't possibly be. I puzzled about it for a moment then realized how totally attentive I was in the wonderful display of unconditional love not more than an arm's length away from me.  I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I was invading something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask,“Wow! How long have you two been married?”
“Been together fourteen years total, married twelve of those.” he replied, without breaking his gaze from his lovely wife's face. “Well then, how long have you been away?” I asked. The man finally turned and looked at me, still beaming his joyous smile. “Two whole days!”
Two days? I was stunned. I had assumed he'd been gone for at least several weeks—if not months. I know my expression betrayed me. “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!”
  The man suddenly stopped smiling.
He looked me straight in the eye, and with forcefulness that burned right into my soul, he told me something that left me a different person, “Don't hope, friend... decide!” Then he flashed me his wonderful smile again, shook my hand and said,“God bless!”
With that, he and his family turned and walked away together.  I was still watching that exceptional man and his special family walst out of sight when my friend came up to me and asked, “What'cha looking at?” Without hesitating, and with a curious sense of certainty, I replied,“My future!”

UGG boots have been a winter¬weather fashion for several years now, combining function, comfort, warmth and even some style. What many UGG¬enthusiasts don't know is that their boots are a breeding ground for bacteria and cause foot problems.
Doctors believe the boots, which are particularly popular among young teenage girls, are leading to a rise in the number of people suffering pains in their feet and knees.
Dr. Ian Drysdale, head of the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, believes because the foot does not get the proper support on the inside, it will lead to more ankle, knee, hip and back problems. “These boots are not designed for outside wear. Just because something becomes a trend or fashionable doesn't mean it's good or right,” he said. “The particular problem with this type of footwear is that it is unsupported. It's a slipper. You wouldn't normally expect to be doing outdoor activities from something that's indoor. If you decide to wear your pajamas outside all the time, someone will come up and say it's not a good idea.” Dr. Drysdale explained that the feet issues become a particular problem among young teenage girls, whose bones are “plastic” and developing when they are growing. “If that structure is developing in an inappropriate way,” he said,“then the ultimate structure will be deformed.”
Mike O'Neill, a consultant surgeon, said,“As the foot slides around, you get wear and tear  (磨损) on the joints on the inside of the foot. The ankle is in the wrong position, the thigh bone also changes position, and you get an abnormal movement in the pelvis, which leads to back problems.”
UGG Australia, who makes the designer version of the boots, told The Daily Wirror that their boots are “comfort” rather than “performance” footwear and consumers should be aware of “knockoffs (仿制品)” which lack reinforced heels in their boots.
