Success is often measured by the ability to overcome  adversity. But,it is often the belief of others that gives us the  courage to try.
J.K.Rowling,author of the Harry Potter book series, began writing at the age of 6.In her biography, she remembers  with great fondness when her good friend Sean, whom she met  in secondary school, became the first person to encourage her   and help build the confidence that one day she would be a very good writer.
“He was the first person with whom I really discussed my  serious ambition to be a writer. He was also the only person  who thought I was bound to be a success at it,which meant  much more to me than I ever told him at the time.”
Despite  many  setbacks,Rowling  persevered  in  her writing, particularly fantasy stories. But it wasn’t until 1990 that she first conceived the idea about Harry Potter. As she recalls,it was on a long train journey from London to Manchester that the idea of Harry Potter simply fell into her head.“To my immense frustration (沮丧),I didn’t have a functioning pen with me,and I was too shy to ask anybody if I could borrow one.I think, now, that this was probably a good thing, because I simply sat and thought, for four (delayed train) hours, and all the details bubbled up in my brain, and this scrawny,black-haired,bespectacled (戴眼镜的) boy who didn’t know he was a wizard became more and more real to me.”
That same year, her mother passed away after a ten-year battle with  multiple  sclerosis, which  deeply  affected  her writing. She went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated from her husband shortly afterwards.
During this time,Rowling was diagnosed with clinical depression.Unemployed, she completed her first novel in area cafes, where she could get her daughter to fall asleep. After being rejected by 12 publishing houses, the first Harry Potter novel was sold to a small British publishing house.
Now with seven books that have sold nearly 400 million copies in 64 languages,J.K.Rowling is the highest earning novelist in history. And it all began with her commitment to writing that was fostered by the confidence of a friend!

  【2014•江西六校高三联考】
Most people will answer a ringing phone.Usually you don’t know who is phoning or how urgent their business is,so a ringing phone is difficult to ignore. In one experiment,a researcher wrote down the numbers of several public phones in stations and airports. Then he called the numbers.Someone nearly always answered. When he asked why, people usually said,“Because it rang.”
A few years ago in New Jersey,a man with a rifle killed 13 people.Armed police surrounded his house but he refused to come out.A reporter found out the phone number of the house and called. The man put down his rifle and answered the phone.“What do you want?” he said,“I’m really busy right now.”
Imagine you are at work and the phone is ringing in someone else’s office.Do you answer it or not?In one survey on telephone use,51% of participants told researchers that they did.We can’t ignore the phone and for that reason,it forces its way into our life.It interrupts what we are doing and on top of that, the caller is often someone we don’t really want to talk to.However,in the survey,58% said they never took the phone off the hook, and 67% didn’t mind if someone called during a television programme. For 44% it wasn’t a problem if someone rang during a meal, while only 28% were annoyed or upset. If someone phoned in the middle of the night,40% told researchers that they got nervous or frightened, while around 30% got angry.
Of course, when someone is really annoying, you can choose to hang up on him/her.This is in fact one of the rudest things you can do on the phone, but 79% said they were prepared to do it in some cases.Only 6% told researchers they never hung up on people.
  1.In the experiment,people answered the researcher’s phone________.
A.in order to help him gather the data
B.for fear that it was urgent
C.to test the function of the phone
D.to show their interest in the survey
2.The gunman answered the phone because________.
A.he decided not to give up his resistance to the police
B.he intended to be friendly with the media
C.he wanted to tell the reporter that he was too busy to offer any information
D.he tended to answer a ringing phone
3.According to Paragraph 3,most people________when they were doing their work or watching  television.
A.refused to answer the phone in someone else’s office
  B.couldn’t ignore the phone
C.minded the ringing of the phone
  D.kept the phone ringing
4.What is implied by the sentence “79% said they were prepared to do it in some cases”?
A.They also agreed to hang up on others regardless of rudeness.
B.They were prepared to punish those rude callers.
  C.They were annoying rude callers.
D.They were going to hang on annoying phones.
5.The purpose of the survey is to find out________.
A.how the phone interrupts people’s work
B.what role the phone plays in people’s lives
C.why people mind a ringing phone sometimes

  【2014•山东省潍坊市高三联合考试】
Apart from psychological illness,we are all largely responsible for our own emotional health. What we say to ourselves over and  over for  days, weeks, months, and sometimes years, has a great effect on how we see ourselves. This also contributes to many mental health disorders.
Many of us have problems with negative thoughts playing on the channel of our minds, but if you’re buried in them and believe them, they could be wearing your sense of self-esteem (自尊).Here are a few beliefs that indicate you may need to switch the channel:I’m not good enough?/I don’t deserve...?/No one likes me?/I’m a failure?
Negative thoughts remind you of your bad feelings and they bring your focus on your failures, and they get you nowhere.
What can you do?Here are some suggestions:
Switch the channel when negative thoughts appear.Self-talk is not so obvious that we often don’t notice its effect on our mood and belief systems.Key things to notice are “if only” or “what if” statements:the former keeps you stuck in the past with regret, while the latter keeps you fearful of the future. There is nothing you can do about the past, and the future isn’t here yet,so stay in the present moment.
Recognize that actions always follow beliefs. You’ll find yourself behaving in ways that are consistent to your beliefs. So,start believing the best about yourself:act as if you believe that you’re a valuable and worthy person.
Develop positive self-talk rather than negative self-talk.Instead of always looking down upon yourself in your head, think of some things you actually lit yourself. What are your strengths? What are you good at?Instead of saying “I’m a  loser”,try saying,“I am capable./I’m good at.../I accept myself the way I am.”
Thinking poorly about ourselves gets us nowhere and is  extremely self-limiting.Decide today to turn off the negative  self-talk channel in your mind and develop your true potential.
1.From the first two paragraphs we can learn that________.
A.lots of people have no sense of self-esteem
B.focusing on negative thoughts may have bad effect on people
C.negative thoughts will strengthen our sense of self-esteem
D.few people have negative thoughts and mental problems
2.The underlined word “wearing” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to________.
  A.strengthening B.protecting
  C.weakening D.replacing
3.What do the suggestions in the text tell us?
A.Our beliefs always come after actions.
B.Positive self-talk does good to our mental health.
C.Looking down upon ourselves is a sign of modesty.
D.“What if” keeps you stuck in the past with regret.
  4.The text encourages us to________.
  A.get rid of negative thoughts
  B.get anywhere we like
  C.think highly of others
  D.turn off the self-talk channel
5.This text is most likely to appear in________.
A.a recreation guide B.a medical journal
C.a science textbook    D.a travel brochure
