Marie Curie was a Polish physicist and chemist who lived between 1867—1934.Together with her husband,Pierre, she discovered two new elements (radium and polonium, two radioactive elements that they extracted chemically from pitch-blended ore) and studied the x-rays they emitted. She found that the harmful properties of x-rays were able to mors.By the end of World War Ⅰ,Marie Curie was probably the most famous woman in the world. She had made a conscious decision, however, not to patent methods of processing radium or its medical applications.
Marie Curie was born on November 7,1867 in Poland and died on July 4,1934.Her co-discovery with her husband Pierre Curie of the radioactive elements radium and polonium represents one of the best-known stories in modern science for which they were recognized in 1901 with the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1911,Marie Curie was honored with a second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry,to honor her for successfully isolating pure radium and determining radium’s atomic weight.
As a child,Marie Curie amazed people with her great memory. She learned to read when she was only four years old.Her father was a professor of science and the instruments that he kept in a glass case fascinated Marie. She dreamed of becoming a scientist, but that would not be easy. Her family became very poor, and at the age of 18,Marie became a governess. She helped pay for her sister to study in Paris.Later, her sister helped Marie with her education. In 1891,Marie attended the Sorbonne University in Paris where she met and married Pierre Curie,a well-known physicist.

“Dr. Papaderos, what is the meaning of life?”
The usual laughter followed, and people stirred to go. Papaderos held up his hand and stilled the room and looked at me for a long time, asking with his eyes if I was serious and seeing from my eyes that I was.
“I will answer your question.”
Taking his wallet out of his hip pocket, he fished into a leather billfold and brought out a very small round mirror, about the size of a quarter. And what he said went like this:
“When I was a small child, during the war, we were very poor and we lived in a remote village. One day, on the road, I found the broken pieces of a mirror. A German motorcycle had been wrecked in that place.
I tried to find all the pieces and put them together, but it was not possible, so I kept only the largest piece. This one, and, by scratching it on a stone, I made it round. I began to play with it as a toy and became fascinated by the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where the sun would never shine—in deep holes and crevices(裂缝)and dark closets. It became a game for me to get light into the most inaccessible places I could find.
I kept the little mirror, and, as I went about my growing up, I would tat in idle moments and continue the challenge of the game. As I became a man, I grew to understand that this was not just a child’s game but a metaphor for what I might do with my life. I came to understand that I am not the light or the source of light. But light—truth, understanding, knowledge—is there, and it will shine in many dark places only if I reflect it.
I am a fragment(碎片)of a mirror whose whole design and shape I do not know. Nevertheless, with what I have I can reflect light into the dark places of this world—into the black places in the hearts of men—and change some things in some people. Perhaps others may see and do likewise. This is what I am about. This is the meaning of my life.”

B. A dying German soldier gave him as a present.
C. He chanced to find it in the street while playing.
D. He put the broken pieces together and made it.
3. Why did Dr. Papaderos like the small round mirror so much as a child?
A. Because he was too poor to afford other toys.
B. Because it could shine the places where the sun couldn’t reach.
C. Because he believed it would bring good luck to him.
D. Because it told him a lot about what life really meant to him.
4. The underlined “metaphor” in the 7th paragraph most probably means _____ .
A. symbol B. source C. light D. purpose
5. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

Everyone knows that taxation is necessary in a modern state:Without it,it would not be possible to pay the soldiers and policemen who protect us;nor the workers in government offices who look after our health, our food, our water, and all the other things that we cannot do for ourselves;nor the ministers and members of parliament(国会) who govern the country for us.By means of taxation,we pay for things that we need just as much as we need somewhere to live and something to eat.

Holidays are really important. Many of us have childhood memories of summer holidays when we were taken away from home to experience new environments and learn in different ways. Hut holidays are expensive and, for those families on low salaries or living on
Benefits, they are often unobtainable. Even the cheapest holidays require travel other additional costs that are difficult for many families to meet. For working parents, the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childcare. When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks, there is a need to spread this across the year. Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday. The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced staff committed (承诺) to giving our children a caring and inspiring learning environment. The number of children receiving free school meals is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast clubs to mare that children get a healthy start to the day. Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educational support. Schools also have an important role in safe guiding children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils. During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed. In setting out its plans for a five-term year, Nottingham City Council is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to four weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, each followed by a two-week break. We believe this will give real
"down time" for school staff and pupils alit will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning. We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, this must
be weighed against the benefits for city children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.

A、 The importance of the holiday.
B、 The holiday reduction plan.
C、 The balance of holidays and school days.
D、 The necessity of cutting down the long holiday.
2、 The underlined word“they” in the second paragraph refers to
A. holidays B、families C、salaries D、 benefits
3、The plans for a shorter summer holiday will help students
A、obtain the cheapest holidays without additional costs
B、 get a chance to spend 8 weeks a term with teachers in school
C、 benefit more from the caring and inspiring learning environment
D、 have more than 5 weeks of school days to receive free school meals
4、It can be inferred from the text that
A、 working parents can enjoy a five-week break to care for their children
B、 some school staff may say " No" to the plans for a shorter summer holiday
C、 the long summer holiday gives teachers and students real “down time”
D、 the suggested plans for a five term school year can hardly be carried out

Plants that live in the rainforest have adapted in amazing ways to several very difficult conditions. This means that the plant has changed something in its “body” or “habits” to make it easier to survive in difficult conditions. There are several conditions they have had to adapt to.First, the soil of the forest floor is shallow. Also, the soil of the rainforest is not very rich,or easy to grow in.Next is the problem of very heavy rain which continues over a large part of the year. Finally, many plants of the rainforest are food for animals that live there.
The biggest problem that rainforest plants have to adapt to is the lacnlight in the rainforest’s lower levels.Plants have adapted to this problem in several ways. Many plants have very large leaves. The large leaf is helpful because it has a bigger surface area. The bigger surface area a leaf has,the more sunlight it can absorb. The canopy trees adapt by growing to be 100 feet tall so that their leaves can grab all available sunlight.Other plants called lianas (climbing woody vines) have adapted by rooting themselves in the soil of the forest floor and g
