Many cities have subways and underground public transportation to take locals and tourists alike rapidly around the city. However, there’s something different about riding a London subway. It may not look different, but the historical value of one of England’s most popular forms of transportation is enough to make riding the subway a must when visiting London. With a little under 100 different stations, the subway can ta almost anywhere you need to go.
Riding a London subway, a person from other countries will notice one major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That’s not rudeness ― people are just too busy to bother looking.
Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet thinking.Nor are they reading a book.New technology has replaced quiet habits.Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.
Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(使用月票上下班者).Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40,000―yes, that’s 40,000 “apps” have been designed.
Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-fillers.One “app”, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks.Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination.iSteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “steam” on your phone screen.
For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction(消遣)of choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music-iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.
And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to occupied, then perhaps you would prefer a film? The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV shows or films on the way to work. With all these distractions, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train.
1.Those who want to save time to reach where they go can download ______ to their iPhones.
  A.iShoot      B.Tube Exits      C.iSteam      D.iPod
2.People in London do not make eye contact on the subway because ______.
A.they are going to work and have no time to communicate with each other
B.they love reading books and do not want to be disturbed
C.they feel sleepy because of getting up early
D.they are busy playing games, reading e-books, listening to music or watching films
3.The underlined word “apps” in the fourth paragraph means ______.
A.computers            B.programs downloaded for the iPhone
C.computer companies   D.fortune from London commuters
4..The main idea of the passage is that ______.
A.London commuters are unfriendly to strangers
B.Apple has earned a lot of money from selling 40,000 apps
C.technology is changing how London commuters spend their traveling time
D.riding a London subway is a must when visiting London
Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination.

As with every other invasive(入侵的)species, introducing worms to an ecosystem(生态系统)that developed without them has an effect on everything that lives there.
This concern is very clear in the Great Lakes region. Non — native earthworms(蚯蚓)have been in North America for a couple hundred years, brought over from Europe with soils and plants. More recently, Asian species, sold as fishing bait(饵料), have started to spread in the Great Lakes region, where there are no native earthworms.
In these earthworm-free forests, when leaves fall onto the forest floor and plants and animals die, they build up into what’s called the duff(腐殖质)layer. In this area, it was just bacteria that broke down the organic material for plants to consume and tap. Earthworms come in, they do their job and do it extremely well — they take that forest floor and turn it into the rich black soil you find in your garden.
That sounds great-but the local plants and animals in the Great Lakes region are used to living with the duff layer, not in the rich soil associated with earthworms. In addition, the rich top soil left by earthworms can wash out in a heavy rain. The differently produced soil is a problem as well. There’s a mat of fine roots in that duff layer-that’s where a lot of our native plants put their root system. When that duff is gone, it’s a lot harder for them to put their roots into the mineral(矿物质的)soil.
  1. What is the author’s attitude towards the work of invasive earthworms ?
  A. Supportive.     B. Worried.         C. Doubtful.         D. Respectful.
  2. How does the Asian species affect the ecosystem of the Great Lakes Region?
  A. By changing the soil.                B. By Killing the native species.
  C. By eating the native plants.           D. By serving as fishing bait.
  3. What does the last paragraph mainly talt ________.
  A. Asian earthworms’ work is helpful to the roots of the native plants.
  B. The native plants have finally adapted to the rich black soil.
  C. The Asian earthworms caused great problems for the local plants.
  D. The local plants find it easy to put their roots into the mineral soil.

The baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert(警觉). Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it. She stares at it carefully. A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze(凝视)starts to lose its focus--until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns: she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world?
Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes. Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise(同样地)when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.
1.Babies are sensitive to the change in _______.
  A. the size of cards  B. the colour of pictures
  C. the shape of patterns D. the number of objects
2.Why did the researchers test the babies with drumbeats?
  A. To reduce the difficulty of the experiment   B. To see how babies recognize sounds
  C. To carry their experiment further          D. To keep the babes interest.
3.Where does this text probably come from?
  A. Science fiction          B. Children’s literature
  C. An advertisement    D. A science report
As the cards change from one to the other, her gave(凝视)starts to lose its focus-until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns: she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card.
Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise(同样地)when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.
