  Module 3 Literature Section Ⅰ Introduction & Reading-Pre-reading
OliverTwist, written in 1837~1838, tells the story of an orphan boy, whose adventures provide a description of the lower depths of London.
Oliver Twist is born in a worse in 1830s, England. His mother, whose name no one knows, is found on the street and dies just after Oliver’s birth. He is brought up in the worse where he and other orphans are maltreated (虐待) and constantly starved. One day, because Oliver asks for more soup, he is sent to an undertaker (送葬人) to work as an apprentice (学徒). The undertaker makes disparaging (轻蔑的) comments about Oliver’s mother. Unable to bear it, Oliver attacks him and runs away to London. There he falls into the hands of a gang of thieves headed by old Jew Fagin. In the thieve’s den (贼窝) Oliver is taught the skill of pocking and stealing and is forced to steal. He is rescued for a time by the kind-hearted Mr Brownlow. But Nancy and other gang members find him and bring him back. It finally turns out that a mysterious man Monks wants to make the boy a criminal.
Once Oliver is forced to help a burglar in a burglary. In the course of it, Oliver is shot and badly wounded. The kind care from Mrs Maylie and her beautiful adopted niece Rose brings him back to health. Nancy, who now repents (后悔) for what she has done, tries to help. She tells Rose and Mr  Brownlow of the mystery about Oliver’s origin and that is found out by the gang and she is brutally murdered by Bill Sirsued by his guilty conscience and an angry mob (匪帮), he hangs himself while trying to escape. Fagin is arrested and executed (处死). It is now known that Monks is the half-brother of Oliver and he does all this for the purpose of seizing the whole of their father’s property. Rose is revealed in the end to be the sister of Oliver’s dead mother. Oliver is finally adopted by Mr Brownlow.
  Section_Ⅰ Introduction & Reading — Pre-reading
  Oliver Asks for More
The room① in which the boys were fed② was a large stone hall, with a large pot③ at one end④. The warden⑤, helped by two women⑥, served⑦ the soup from this pot at meal times. Each boy was allowed one bowl of soup and no more, except on special holidays when he was given another 60 grams of bread⑧. The bowls never needed washing⑨, as the boys cleaned them with their spoons, trying to eat every bit of⑩ soup⑪.  This never took very long, as the spoons were almost as large as the bowls. When they had cleaned their bowls in this way⑫, they would sit staring at⑬ the pot with eager⑭ eyes⑮, as if they wanted to eat it. Boys usually have excellent appetites⑯. Oliver Twist and his companions⑰ slowly starved for three months until finally, they became quite wild with hunger⑱. ①in which为“介词+关系代词”结构,in which the boys were fed是定语从句,修饰先行词the room。
  ②feed/fiːd/v. 提供食品 ③pot/pɒt/n.锅
④with a large pot at one end是with复合结构。

(1)here, there, now, then, away, down, in, off, out等副词位于句首且句子主语为名词时,用全部倒装。
  Now comes the chance.
There stands a leaning tower in the city of Pisa.
Up went the arrow into the air.
  Here he comes.
By the river stands a big paper-making factory.
