Unit 2 The United Kingdom

(2018•唐山一模)When you’re walking on your way through one of life’s storms,it is human nature to focus on getting back to normal,to “bounce bacickly as possible to a place where things are calm, familiar and comfortable.
However, actually it is unrealistic to think we can ever truly return emotionally and intelligently to where we were before the storm because every experience changes us in some way.For example, when we experience a major health scare, possibly involving some hospital time,we can never go back to being the person we were before the event even if we fully recover because we have experienced firsthand the fragility(脆弱) of life, not to mention coming face to face with death.
So,now that we can never return, what should we do?
Consider this...how is it that two people can be faced with the same hardship and while one becomes hopeless and feels anger and upset, the other is able to overcome their circumstances and grows stronger than ever as a result of the experience?
At one extreme,we may choose to accept the role of unlucky victim,or become trapped in the “Why is it always me!” negative and frustrating(令人沮丧的) situations.Either way is the result of a fixed mindset(思维模式) that is resistant to growth and change. If this is your approach to life, you will be far less likely to be active in effectively managing change and recovering from bad situations.
But there is another choice. If you are honest enough, you may consider what was once “normal” for you was just the main cause of your storm. You can choose to hug change and uncertainty and learn to grow forward through all of your experiences.Of course, this means doing the work to develop the skills and habits that will enable you to handle life’s occasional storms.
In conclusion,it is up to each of us to choose the meaning we apply to our situations at all times.Different choices will lead to different lives.Of course you can grow forward if you are determined to choose to live a positive life regardless of whatever hardships you are facing.
1.What does the author try to convey with the example in the second paragraph?
A.We will understand life much better after an escape from death.
B.It usually takes a long time to recover from a health problem.
C.It’s unlikely to return to where we were after certain events.
D.We can recover from an emotional problem much more easily.
2.When faced with hardships, some people choose to be a victim because of ___________ .
A.their terrible experiences
B.their negative thoughts
C.their poor health
D.their bad luck
3.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To advise us to manage bad emotions.
B.To persuade us to get back to normal.
Unit 3 Life in the future

Kanda really doesn’t like to walk alone. The scientist from a research institute of intelligent robots finds the experience so boring that he’d rather drive—even though he lives close to his lab and knows that walking is healthy.“I enjoy walking with someone, like with my wife, with my daughter,” Kanda said.“But they are not always available.”
So Kanda, who specializes in human-like bots, developed a robotic walking partner that could make small talk based on its surroundings, which,he hopes, might motivate people to get out and exercise more. The bot rests on a person’s shoulder like a boxy parrot. It weighs about a pound and a half and sits roughly 8.5 inches high, and is 3.5 inches wide and 10 inches long.A microphone,a speaker, and an internal camera allow it to communicate. It’s even equipped with a smile.
Kanda and his team collected video from five different locations, including a garden and a shopping mall, and created a dataset of small talk topics related to each location. Then they programmed the robot to associate visual cues with specific topics.A special speech software provided the robot with a voice.Near a group of parked cars, for example,it might say,“In a big parking lot, sometimes I forget where I parked.”
They tested the robot on 15 volunteers,10 males and 5 females, who were paid and averaged about 26 years old.“Have you ever blown a puff of dandelion(蒲公英) seeds into the air?”The robot asked a participant, who smiled and responded,“Yes,I often did that when I was a child.” Although several participants noted the robot’s weight,Kanda was surprised that no one considered the experience strange or funny.“I guess people enjoy new technologies,” he said.
Just liman partner,Kanda’s bot isn’t perfect. It’s not able to go for walks in heavy rain and, while the robot can make expressions,it can’t really hold a conversation, about which Kanda is most worried.Despite its limits,Kanda was comforted by the bot’s presence.“I felt a kind of sense of being with someone,” he said,“particularly when it spoke.”
1.Why does Kanda have the idea of developing a robotic walking partner?
A.Because he wants someone to accompany him while walking.
B.Because he has never developed a robot like a parrot.
C.Because his family are unwilling to walk with him.
D.Because he is crazy about developing robots.
根据第一段的“‘I enjoy walking with someone,like with my wife,with my daughter,’Kanda said.‘But they are not always available.’”
2.What characteristic does the robot have?
A.It can “speak” and “see”.
B.It can walk liman being.
C.It can communicate with people freely.
D.It is much more humorous than a real person.
根据第二段倒数第二句以及第三段的“Then they programmed...with a voice.”
3.What is necessary for the robot to function?
