  Step I: Dictation
  Dictate some important words and expression in Unit2.
  Step II: Explanation
  In this part try to help the students analyze the difficult, long and complex sentences and guess the meaning of the new words; ask them to deal with the language points in the context.
  1. Some festivals are held to honor the dead  or satisfy the ancestors, who might  return either to help or to do harm.
  An attributive clause.
  The sentence means people hold some festivals either to show respect to the dead or to make their ancestors happy in case they might come back to do harm.
  2. India has a national festival on October 2 to honor Mahatma Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain.
  a noun phrase followed by an attributive clause as the appositive.
  Step III: Language points
  1. do harm 损害,危害, 伤害
  do more harm than good. 弊大于利
  do harm to sb (idom )=harm sb
  Smoking does great harm to one’s health.
  吸烟对健康危害极大.
  2. in memory of纪念
  He wrote a long moving poem n memory of his good friend.为纪念他挚友,他写下了一首感人的长诗。
  3. lead to 导致, 招致(to是介词,后接动词的-ing形式)
  Careless driving led to this accident.
  lead sb to+n. 带领…./通往/到…
  4. dress up : to wear one’s best clothes 穿上盛装
  We dressed up for the wedding.
  5. play a trick /tricks(on sb)  捉弄某人,开某人玩笑
  It’s acceptable to play tricks on your friends on April 1st. 4月1日那天,同朋友们开玩笑是可以接受的.
  6. look forward to sth/doing sth  期待某事/做某事
  I look forward to hearing from you as early as possible.
  7. as though =as if 仿佛,好象,从句表示与现在事实相反,谓语动词用一般过去式
  e.g: He looks as though/if he were ill.
  8. day and night 意为“日夜;昼夜;整天”,
  在句中常用作时间状语.
  He worked day and night in order to pay off the debt.
  为了还清债务,他日日夜夜地工作。

  Step I: Warming up by discovering useful words and expressions
  Turn to page 4 and do exercises No. 1, 2 and 3. Checr answers against your classmates’.
  Step II: Reading and finding
  Asdents to read the text of FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS. When reading, find out examples of may/ might, can/ could, will/ would, shall/ should, must/ can used in the sentences.
  Step III: Grammar point
  Explain for Ss the grammar point: the modal verb
  (1) can/could 可以表示能力、许诺、请求或某种可能性,could还可用于:
  ① 提出委婉的请求,(注意在回答中不可用could)。例如:
  — Could I have the television on? 我能看电视吗?
  — Yes, you can. / No, you can't. 可以/不可以。
  ② 在否定句、疑问句中表示推测或怀疑。例如:
  He couldn't be a bad man. 他不大可能是坏人
  (2) may/might 表示允许或请求;表示没有把握的推测;may 放在句首,表示祝愿。might 表示推测时,不表示时态,只是可能性比may 小。
  (3) will/would 克表示请求、许诺、同意、过去的习惯等。但需要注意:
  ① would lild like to do = want to 想要,为固定搭配。例如:Would you like to go with me? 想和我一块去吗?
  ② Will you…? Would you like…? 表示肯定含义的请求劝
  说时,疑问句中一般用some, 而不是any。
  例如:Would you like some cake? 吃点蛋糕吧。
  ③ 否定结构中用will,一般不用would, won't you是一种委婉
  语气。 例如:Won't you sit down? 你不坐下吗?
  (4) shall/should可以表示推测、判断或建议。shall指现在,should指过去。
  (5) must/can’t指推测或猜想 must用在肯定句中表示较有把握的推测,意为“一定”,否定推测用can't。
  Step IV: Consolidation
  Turn to page 5 and do the exercises 2 and 3 in groups of four, then check the answers with the whole class.
  Step V: Homework
  Ask Ss to finish the exercises of Using Words And Expressions and Using Structures on P42~P43

  Step I: Homework checking
  Check the student’s homework (Ex1, Ex2 and Ex3 on P42).
  Step II: Listening(Using Language, Page6)
  1. Ask Ss to discuss the questions with their partners in groups of four and try to give the answers.
  (1) What is a Carnival?
  (2) What do they usually do in the Carnival Parade?
  2. Ask Ss to listen to the tape and try to get the main idea of the listening text.
  3. Ask Ss to listen to the tape again and answer the following questions.
  (1) What is wrong with Li Mei’s clothing and shoes?
  (2) What advice does Carla give Li Mei?
  (3) Why is it important for them to have water?
  (4) Why is it difficult for them to hear each other?
  (5) Why do they plan to meet at the parking lot at 8 o’clock ?
  Suggested Answers:
  1) Li Mei’s clothing is too thick and her shoes are not comfortable enough to walk in for a long time.
  2) Carla suggests that Li Mei change her clothes to something comfortable, wear some lighter and cooler clothing and also take a hat.
  3) It is important for them to have water because it is very hot and they will be doing a lot of walking.
  4) It is difficult for them to hear each other because the music is very loud.
  5) They plan to meet at the parking lot at 8 o’clocse they might get separated in crowed.
  4. Play the tape again for Ss to check their answers.
  Step III: Writing
  Write a brochure for your favorite festival, introducing it and giving advice to those who want to come. Be sure to include:
  1. Where will it take place
  2. How people can get there
  3. What kind of weather people should expect
  4. What things people should bring
  5. Three things that visitors should see
  6. How much it will cost
  Use the following expressions to help you:
  You must…  You could… You might…You would have to…
  You should…  You can… You would… You need …
  Step IV: Summing Up
  Help students to sum up what they have learned in this unit
  by finishing the table on Page 8.
