阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A.B.C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
A different sort of generation gap is developing in the workplace. Someone --- specifically the father-daughter team of Larry and Meagan Johnson --- has figured out that on some American job sites, five generations are working side by side.
In their new boot generations in the workplace the pair argue that while such an age difference adds a lot of texture and a variety of life experiences, it can also bring tensions and conflicts.
The Johnsons are human-resource trainers and public speakers. Dad Larry is a former health-care executive; daughter Meagan is a onetime high-level sales manager.
Here are the oldest and youngest of the five generations they identify:
They call the oldest group Traditionals, born before 1945. They were heavily influenced by the lessons of the Great Depression and World War Two. They respect authority, set a high standard of workmanship, and communicate easily and confidently. But they’re also stubbornly independent. They want their opinions heard.
At the other extreme are what the Johnsons call Linksters, born after 1995 into today’s more complicated, multi-media world. They live and breathe technology and are often social activists.
You won’t find many 15-year olds in the offices of large companies, except as volunteers, of course, but quite old and quite young workers do come together in sales environments like bike shops and ice-cream stores.
The Johnsons, Larry and Meagan, represent a generation gap themselves in their work with jobsite issues. The Johnsons’ point is that as the average lifespan continues to rise and retirement dates get delayed because of the tight economy, people of different generations are working side by side, more often bringing with them very different ideas about company loyalty and wores.
The five generations are heavily influenced by quite different events, social trends, and the cultural phenomena of their times. Their experiences shape their behavior and make it difficult, sometimes, for managers to achieve a strong and efficient workplace.
Larry and Meagan Johnson discuss all this in greater detail in a new book, “Generations, Inc.: From Boomers to Linksters --- Managing the Friction Between Generations at Worblished by Amacom Press, which is available in all good bookstore from this Friday.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A.B.C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
Experts believe that storms and severe weather in North America and Asia have disrupted bird flight paths across the world and swept huge numbers of bird species towards the British Isles.
Birds flying to the other side of the Atlantic or to the Pacific to lay their eggs have been trapped in Britain and Ireland, adding their numbers to native species, and causing great excitement in the bird-watching community.
Local birdwatchers have already observed a total of 442 species in the British Isles this year. The highest number ever seen in one year is 445, in 2008.
“We only need four more to brear record,” said Lee Evans, who runs the British Birding Association. “With three months to go I’m sure we’ll do it.”
Last month an extremely rare Siberian Rubythroat bird was seen in Scotland, sending hundreds of birdwatchers north in the hope of catching a glimpse of this colourful Asian beauty. Another very uncommon bird, the bufflehead duck was cited in Cornwell and caused similar excitement. “I couldn’t believe it,” said Evans. “The poor thing was completely knackered. It must have been blown to England by the storms while trying to fly from Canada to the southern United States for the winter. That’s 3000 miles!”
Evans said that global warming over the past decade was playing a key role in transforming bird movements across the world. In addition, melting Arctic sea ice may also be opening up bird flight paths over the North Pole, making it easier for birds from the Pacific — such as the slaty-bacll and tufted puffin, both of which appeared in London earlier this year — to reach Britain.
Bird-watching is becoming an increasingly popular hobby among all age groups, added Evans. “A fifth of our members are under 18. This is a round-the-year hobby that you can enjoy from the kitchen window or from a car. More and more people are bird-watching, and as a result more and more unexpected species are being spotted in the British Isles.”
1. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The results of global warming.
B. Changes in the British bird population.
C. Increasing environmental pollution.
D. Worsening British weather.
2. The underlined word “knackered” is closest in meaning to __________.
A. bored B. knocked C. spotted D. tired
3. How many more bird species are needed to equal the British bird-watching record?
A. 3. B. 4. C. 442. D. 445.
4. According to the passage, which of the following birds comes from Asia?
A. Slaty-bacll. B. Bufflehead. C. Rubythroat. D. Tufted puffin.
5. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a possible reason for seeing more bird species in Britain?
A. An increase in the number of birdwatchers.
B. A growth in the number of native species.
C. Storms due to global warming.
D. The melting Arctic ice cap.
