How can we reduce the risk?
There are four general approaches to coping with volcanic dangers. We can try to keep the danger from occurring---often an impossible task. We can try to change its path or reduce its impact on existing development. We can take steps to protect future development. We can also do our best to have disaster response plans in place before they are needed.
  Removing the Threat
Clearly, there is no way to stop an eruption. We can, however, attempt to reduce the eruption’s effects by strengthening structures, for example, strengthening roofs to support the weight of tephra(火山灰) deposits or by building protective worch as walls to deflect lava(熔岩) flow away from developed areas. Such efforts can be and have been successful, but are of limited use in a large-scale(范围)eruption.
  Planning for the Future
Protecting future development from volcanic dangers is a simpler task. Before building, we should judge the risk. If the risk seems too great, a safer location should be found. This type of planning is very effective, but all too often, people are drawn to the lush(葱郁的),rolling land of a quiet volcano.
  Disaster Preparedness(预案)
When a volcano comes to life, a few weeks may not be enough time to avoid a tragedy. Planning is the key to saving lives. Well before the warning signs occur, people must be educated about volcanic dangers. Escape plans must be in place. Communication between scientists, officials, the media, and the general public should be practiced. Emergency measures must be thought out and agreed upon.
If you doubt the importance of these efforts, take another look at past volcanic tragedies, such as the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz. Communication failures left the town of Armero unprepared for escape. When a deadly mudflow came down the slope(斜坡), 21,000 people--90 percent of the town’s people--died.

Seattle, Washington, is nicknamed "Rain city", but it's snow that is making it famous. On January 12, Seattle residents(居民)set the Guinness World Record for the biggest snowball fight. More than5, 800 people showed up to throw snowballs at one another at the Seattle Centre, a park, arts and entertainment campus that includes the city’s famous Space Needle.
It didn't snow in Seattle on that day, but there was snow in a small comer of the city-enough to  make a lot of kids' dreams come true. Trucks carried 34 loads of snow from Snoqualmie Pass, an hour away in Washington’s Cascade mountain range, to the Seattle Center. It took 162,000 pounds of the white stuff to build the winter wonderland.
The goal! To breainness World Record for the biggest snowball fight. The event, dubbed “Snow Day”, was also a fundraiser(资金筹集活动)for the Boys and Girls Clubs. Seattle businessman Neil Bergquist took three months to organize the playful battle. He wanted to raise money for kids “by remembering what it was like to feel like a kid.”
Although Seattle residents aren't used to snow, they succeeded in getting enough people to come out and play. About 6,000 tickets were sold online. Participants were given bar-coded(条形码)wristbands  when they arrived. The wristbands were scanned as participants entered and left the location, so Guinness had a head count at all times. There were 130 judges for the official minute-and-a-half snowball fight.  Anyone not throwing snowball wasn't counted in the total.
To raise money for the Clubs, companies paid for space to build their own snow forts. Some highlights included a snow slide and even a few snow toilets. A Guinness official confirmed the count of 5,834 people. Seattle beat the previous world record of about 5,400 at a 2010 snowball fight in South Korea.
  26. What made Seattle famous in the world?
  A.  The largest snowball fight took place.  B. It snowed for the first time.
  C. Many people traveled to the city   D. The largest snowball formed in a day.
