Meg finished the accounts and took Lottie out into the narrow street. They got to the marst before the stall(摊位) keepers pacp. There wasn’t much left--just apples and some nuts. But Lottie liked apples and they could get bread from tomorrow morning’s bake.
After they ate, the two girls curled up on the makeshift (凑合的) bed. Lottie went to sleep right away, but Meg lay with her eyes open. Thoughts whirled(旋转)through her heart. “If it wasn’t the plague, Dad wouldn’t have been infected with it and Mom would have come for us by now. But she hasn’t. Does that mean we’ll never see her or Dad again? Will Samuel fetch us in the morning? Will his father let him? How long can we stay here if he doesn’t? How will we find our way to Uncle Robert’s?”
She wanted to run home to find Mom and Dad and sit with them by the fire. But she knew she could never do that again. At least, she thought, “the guard hasn’t come, and we’ll be gone by the morning. ”  Then she slept.
Med didn’t feel the draught (气流)of night air that blew in through the open window above her. She didn’t see the hot ashes swirl out of the fire beneath the oven. At first she didn’t smell the hay, burning in the corner of the next room.
A ribbon of smoke floated across her face and made her cough. It woke her. She rubbed her stinging eyes. Through the office door, she saw flames climbing up the wall, She heard them crackling in the wooden ceiling.
We’ll have to get out, Meg thought, but we’ll never get past that fire! She shook her sister. “Wap, Lottie!” Lottie stirred and opened her eyes. She clung(抓住) to Meg, terrified by the leaping flames. Meg lifted her up to the window and pushed her out feet first. The bag of clothes went next.

With a spinning head, I turned to the experts. At kindergarten, my daughter was given a school readiness test by a child health nurse.
