November 11 is now the world’s largest online shopping day. On November 11, 2014, the country’s biggest online shopping company, Alibaba, had more than 35 million yuan in sales—a worldwide record for a single day.
Alibaba, which owns Taobao and Tmall, first set up the unofficial holiday five years ago. The company realized single people might find comfort and happiness in buying electronic equipment and other products online. Soon, just about everyone else did, too. Now November 11 has become the most important day in a year for shoppers, whether they are single or married.
At the same time, Chinese are also doing an increasing amount of shopping on their mobile phones, which is not surprising considering the increasing sales of smart phones. In the first hour of sales, from midnight to 1 am, Alibaba said 24 percent of the orders came from smart phones.
Chinese customers are expected to spend 290 million dollars in online shopping. Bain, a global consulting company, expects online shopping in China to grow at a rate of 32 percent from 2014 to 2014. “Chinese customers are bargain hunters, and that is what is driving the success of November 11,” said Serge Hoffmann, a partner at Bain in Hong Kong.
  Questions:
  1. How many orders came from smart phones in the first hour of sales that day?
