　　What made you want to become a librarian?
　　Looking at career options I was very attracted to the idea of the public library as a free space open to everyone. Reading has always been an important and joyful part of my life: I wanted to be able to share that joy with other people.
　　Outline your usual routine on a day in the library
　　I check my emails and calendar and have a quick meeting with other members of the team to finalise the agenda（议程）for the day ahead. No two days are the same. There is always something new to look forward to at the library: the opening of an art exhibition by a local artist or the launch of a new book. I may have to speak to a group of students and their teachers or assist a local community group who are planning a cultural event or researching a history of their area.
　　What’s the most satisfying part of being a librarian?
　　The most satisfying part for me is being part of large national network. Last year over 17 million visits were recorded to public libraries in Ireland. Surveys indicate that customer satisfaction rates are always very high. A very rewarding part of my job is nurturing the reading habit among children and young people, opening up a magical window on the world for a new generation.
　　In your time how has the library service changed?
　　The library service has survived and thrived（兴旺）over the past 150 years because of its willingness to grow and adapt to the changing needs of society. The role of the library in delivering a broad range of information, learning, and cultural services to local communities is now recognised. Information technology has had a huge impact on the range of services the library can deliver and has helped to greatly improve access and cost efficiency.

　　At a recent conference in Hong Kong, Jim Rogers, a Wall Street tycoon（商业大享）, played for the other participants a video of his daughter reciting aloud a classical Chinese poem. This is not the first time Happy Rogers, the elder daughter of the global investor, has exhibited her fluency in the Chinese language.
　　While it is not uncommon for young Chinese language learners to recite ancient poems, Happy spoke in classical Chinese with a fluency that could make even some native Chinese speakers envious.
　　And recently, during US President Donald Trump’s visit to China, his granddaughter Arabella’ s recital of Chinese poems went viral on the internet, making the five-year-old a “popular figure” among Chinese audiences.
　　There is a long list of foreign celebrities and their children learning Chinese, which includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ four children and Faceboonder Mark erberg and his daughter. And Prince Willam, Duke of Cambridge, media reports say, studied Chinese as a compulsory subject in school.
