Success doesn’t begin until you begin the walk down the way towards your goals. And your walk down the way always begins first with a baby step. Why do we call them baby steps? Are they really anything more than our next step down life’s way?
Baby steps are the first steps we take as an act of faith. We see others stepping out and we want to show our ability to walk by following them. As we grow, we continue our development by taking extra baby steps. Sometimes we fall; sometimes we fail. After that, all steps become an act of faith; we just become more practiced. If you say to yourself“I don’t want to make a fool of myself”or“I’d better be good at this”, you’ll probably never take the baby steps towards your goals and end up lying in your own self-pity.
As a culture, we focus on results. We thint every risk that must be taken to reach our goals. There are few people who are excellent performers of any tasks the first time they try them. They fail and succeed. Then, they build upon their abilities learned each time. They practice their skills and use their talents through baby steps before they are ready to prove them to the whole world.
So, learn to take those baby steps to reach the goals before you. Know that you can depend on God to show you the way. As you become more experienced, your baby steps become a walk, then a jump, and finally a sprint. That’s how our baby steps lead us through the marathon of life.

They were just grasshoppers(蚂蚱). But there were millions of them, which was why dad was so anxious to get rid of them.
“They’re totally destroying our beans, ”he told Mom over lunchtime one Saturday. “I’ve been trying to keep them out of the tomatoes, but I don’t know if I can make it. ”
“Isn’t there something you can do about them? ”Mom asked. She was mostly concerned about the tomatoes. “I think there’s a spray(喷雾)or something, ”Dad said. “I’m going down to the garden center after lunch and see if they have any suggestions. ”
I’m pretty sure that’s what he said. But what I heard was, “While I’m gone, why don’t you and George come up with your own plan for getting rid of the grasshoppers? ”
And so that’s what we did. It was the summer between fifth and sixth grade, so we were feeling pretty clever and mature. Certainly we knew how to get rid of these grasshoppers. That seemed simple enough. Finally Ron and Don joined us but then, things got a little crazy. Before we knew it we were doing terrible experiments. I won’t describe our experiments. Let’s just call it“The Adventures of the Marquis de Orkin”. Dad came home and saw these different deaths. We were laughing, but the laughter quicrned to silence when we saw the look on my Dad’s face.
“What are you boys doing? ”he asked.
“We’re just sort of helping to get rid of the grasshoppers, ”I said.
“This isn’t getting rid of grasshoppers, ”Dad said. “This is killing. ”
I was confused. I looked at the insecticide he was carrying. “But aren’t you going to kill grasshoppers with that? ”I asked.
“Yes, because it’s something we need to do for the protection of our garden, ”he said seriously. “But I’m not going to enjoy it. ”

I looked at the insecticide he was carrying.

C. we thought of a way to deal with the grasshoppers
D. we were clever enough to get rid of the grasshoppers

I received a call today asking if I would be willing to bring food to a family in need. The mother was having a major operation and would be lying down for several weeks. Of course, I responded with an immediate“Yes! ”. As I planned the meal in my head, I reflected on how many times over the years I had been asked to prepare food. I have done so countless times with a very open heart.
But the truly amazing thing is that I have received double over the course of my life. When my mother passed away, our house was filled with fresh dinners for weeks. A woman from the church of our community stepped by each evening with some food. The gift of food was her small way of trying to ease our pain.
Later in my life, when I was on bed rest during my pregnancy with twins, women of the church again stepped in to help. They arranged babysitting for my two-year-old daughter, and brought lovely dinners to our house. Even when I was put in the hospital, my husband would bring cooked meals to my hospital room. How we relied on these dinners to feed my tired husband and young daughter!
Food is all about comfort. It feeds our bodies, but it can also feed our souls. When you hear people talking about their favourite holidays, it usually includes their feelings connected with sharing food. I know that I will have many more opportunities in my lifetime to prepare food for others. It is truly a gift I want to prepare and deliver to someone in need.

A. had to stay in bed for several weeks
