I just hope that our brains won’t crash(死机). Are you working on your typing skills to ma a more efficient worker? That may be all for nothing as Intel believes that we’ll be able to control our computers with our brains by 2020.
Intel and its research partners are studying how brain acts when it thinks. For example, scientists have found that people’s brains react in a similar manner when asked to think of a bear.
Through sensors(感应器)that can find this sort of brain activity, Intel thinks that it will be able to read and translate this into an input system thanks to a chip in the brain.
“We’re trying to prove you can do interesting things with brain waves. ”Intel research scientist Dean Pomerleau told Computerworld. “Eventually people may be willing to be, more devoted to brain implants(植入物). Imagine being able to surf the Web with the Power of your thoughts. ”
Even if thinking about a bear isn’t enough to show that you want to copy and paste something. Intel still thinks that there’s a future in using your brain instead of the keyboard.
“If we can get to the point where you can accurately find specific words, you could mentally type, ”he added. “You could compose characters or words by thinking about letters flashing on the screen or typing whole words rather than their individual characters. ”
While this may all sound impractical for present time, Intel thinks that it’s possible and something we’ll all want.
“I thinman beings are unusually adaptive(适应的), ”said Andrew Chien, vice president of research and director of future technologies research at Intel Labs. “If you told people 20 years ago that they would be carrying computers all the time, they would have said, ‘I don’t want that. I don’t need that. ’Now you can’t get them to stop carrying devices. There are a lot of things that have to be done first but I think implanting chips into human brains is well within the scope of possibility. ”
Make good use of your favorite mouse and keyboard set-up before they’re old-fashioned.

【2014•江西省赣中四校高三第二次联考】
Studies show farmland in Africa is often lacking in important nutrients. But researchers say a combination of farming methods may help.
Researchers wonder how to increase production without necessarily clearing more land to grow additional crops.American researchers say that can happen with greater use of an agricultural system called perenniation. It mixes food crops with trees and perennial plants—those that return year after year.
Soil scientist John Reganold says,“One of the major problems is that the soils are fairly poor in most of the regions. So how do you grow food on poor soils? There have to be food production systems that can build the soil and improve the yield.”
Mr Reganold says poor soil may have resulted from years of weathering that washed away many nutrients. He says some farmers may have done more harm than good.
“They have been actually using farming practices where they’re not putting in organic matter. They’re not putting in fertilizers. They can’t afford those things. And it just runs the soil down.So they’re worsening the situation.”
The scientist says the word perenniation defines three systems that are already used in Africa. The oldest of the three is called evergreen agriculture. This is where farmers plant trees with their crops.Farmers in Africa have been doing this for sixty years, but it seems to be growing in popularity.
The method is gaining widespread use in countries such as Niger,Burkina Faso,Malawi and Zambia. The trees are planted among maize (玉米),millet or sorghum crops. They not only add nitrogen (氮) to the soil through their roots, but also through their leaves when they fall off and break down.At other times of the year, the trees can protect plants from strong sunlight.
John Reganold says he knows of one woman who has had great success with perenniation.
“She’s a grandmother in her fifties. Her name is Rhoda Mang’yana and she started using this system about twenty years ago.And her yields initially were about a ton of maize. Now with a good year she gets four tons per hectare, four times what she was getting.”

安徽望江县2017高考英语一轮阅读理解提升选练(四)及答案
阅读理解。阅读下列短文, 从给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D) 中, 选出最佳选项。
It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.
This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the“handathon”contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car.
It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world. And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else—someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.
Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.
Maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. Entrants in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by“getting lots of sleep”. Others say they will“eat healthy food”or“pray for success”. The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end.
Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry(敌对)between competitors. They help each other out and keep each other’s spirits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement.
