(2016•河北衡水中学模拟)To American visitors,Iceland is a very interesting country, partly because it is different in so many ways from what he or she is used to seeing at home. There are quite a few things that are not done,or that do not exist on the island—quite a few “No’s”.
There is no pollution, for instance. No dogs are permitted in Reykjavik, the capital. There is no television on Thursdays or during the entire month of July, and only three hours of black-and-white TV the rest of the time. There is no hard liquor (烈酒) on Wednesdays and no beer at any time. There are no handguns, only one jail of thirty-five cells (狱室) in the entire land—an admirable figure, even for a small country of 313,376 people.
There is no army, air force or navy. There is no tipping for anything. There are no large stores open on Saturdays or Sundays.Since Iceland is situated just under the Arctic Circle, there is no darkness in summer and no daylight in winter. But thanlf Stream, the climate is rather mild, with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees to 52 degrees in July.
The rules on television, liquor and guns are the result of government decisions. But the absence of pollution is due in great part to the fact that Iceland gets its power from the enormous geyser. They provide all the energy needed by the country. In fact,Iceland uses only 3 percent of all the available power of its hot springs.
Iceland has been described as a democratic independent country where more fish are caught and more books are published per person than anywhere else in the world. The Icelanders have always felt a particular love for literature. They composed their first books in the ninth and tenth centuries AD.These works were poems and tales about the kings, heroes, and heroines of Iceland and Norway. At first, the stories were memorized and passed from generation to generation. They were finally written down between 1140 and 1220.The Icelanders have never stopped writing ever since.“Rather shoeless than bookless,” they proudly say.

Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer (温度计) for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear.1. An estimated eight million people in Britain enjoy walking in the Peak District every year. But what many who enjoy outdoor hobbies don’t know is that their “right to walk” was won by men who sacrificed their own freedom to gain access to the countryside for all.
In 1932 wealthy landowners had private use of large areas of uplands for hunting.Walkers were t by guards, until a group of 400 people from Manchester and Yorkshire, led by Benny Rothman, engaged on a mass trespass (侵入).The campaigner was put into prison with four other men.
The event is supported by many with starting a movement that paved the way for the establishment of national parks.Mr Rothman died in 2002 but he is now being honoured for his contribution with the revealing of a blue plaque (匾额) on his former home in Crofton Avenue,Timperley,Greater Manchester.
Retired professor,Harry, who followed in his father’s footsteps by specialising in environmental issues, says:“He was a very optimistic man and he made the best of it when he went to prison. It didn’t put him off campaigning,he went on campaigning on environmental issues most of his life.”Mr Rothman did live to see the Countryside Rights of Way Act passed by Parliament in 2000,ensuring the freedom of the countryside for future generations.
Roly Smith,a friend of Mr Rothman and an author of walidebooks, said:“It is because of them that we have got what we have today.”
Councillor Jonathan Coupe,of Trafford Council, said:“The honour of having a blue plaque attributed (归因于) to you means you have really made an impression on society.”
“Mr Rothman contributed to the changing of history and it is because of him that we are able to enjoy the local countryside as often and freely as we can today.”

Ⅰ.阅读理解(共两节)
第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。
Shake Shack is a new kind of restaurant becoming more popular in the U.S.The restaurants are not “fast food”.They are known as “fast casual”.
Observers say Americans want more choices and fresh food when choosing where and what to eat. This trend is one reason why the fast food restaurant McDonald’ s has struggled financially. In the last quarter of 2014,McDonald’ s net income dropped by about $300 million. The January earnings report brought more bad news.Worldwide sales dropped for the eighth month in a row and even more than expected. While McDonald’ s is struggling to get their customers back,Shake Shack,is doing well in making money. The New York-based burger chain had a very successful IPO,or initial public offering,of shares at the end of January. On its first day of trading,Shake Shack went from $21 a share to just under $46 a share.Being part of the “fast casual” trend has helped Shake Shack.Other fast casual restaurants in the U.S.include Chipotle and Panera.
Bonnie Riggs,a restaurant expert with NPD has studied Americans’ restaurant habits for almost 30 years. She says one reason why Americans like fast casual food is that it’ s new.It’ s creative. It’ s something different and people like to try new things. Her study shows Americans made 61 billion visits to restaurants last year.Three out of four visits were to fast food restaurants, like McDonald’ s.Fast casual is still a small percentage of restaurant visits, but it has developed fast.Just as Ms.Riggs says,“It’ s growing by leaps and bounds, because they meet consumers’ needs. They know it’ s being prepared while they wait,it’ s fresh, quality food, good tasting food at what they say are reasonable and affordable prices.”
Many Americans still like their fast food. They just are not going as often. They are finding other ways to have a meal.
