Unit 1 Festivals around the world
Ⅰ. 要点导读
要点导读:honour, satisfy, award, apologize, remind, take place, lead to, in the shape of,
in memory of, as though, turn up, 情态动词等。
重点单词
1. Some festivals are held to honour the dead, or satisfy and please the ancestors, who could return either to help or to do harm. (P2)
(1) honour“向某人 / 某物致敬;表扬某人;给某人以荣誉”, 常用结构honour sb / sth (with sth)。
eg: Will you honour me with your visit?
(2) the dead“死者”,the + adj. 表示一类人,eg: the rich (富人),the poor (穷人),the wounded (伤员),the blind (盲人)
(3) satisfy vt. “满足;使满意”, satisfied adj.,常用搭配有be satisfied with“对……满意”。
eg: She is never satisfied with what she has got.
(4) do harm to sb = harm sb“损害;伤害;危害”;do more harm than good“弊大于利”;be harmful to sb“对某人有害”。
eg: Smoking is harmful to your health.
2. Some people might win awards for their animals, flowers, fruit and vegetables. (P2)
award (1) n. “奖励;奖品(尤其指政府或组织给予的)”。
(2) v. “授予”
reward“报酬;奖赏”,常指为了报答而给的报酬;prize指各种竞赛获奖的奖励。

apologize vi. “道歉”
apologize to sb“向……表示歉意” eg: What I have done is right. Why should I apologize to her?
apologize for“因……道歉” eg: You must apologize for not inviting him to attend the party.

remind “使(某人)回想起过去经历过的事或见过的人/物”,主语起提示的作用。通常用remind sb of sth,也可用remind + sb + 从句。eg: The closed door of his house reminded me that he had gone to Shanghai.
The sight of the piece of wire reminded me how he once opened a safe.
经典短语
1. Discuss when they take place, what they celebrate and one thing that people do at that time. (P1)
take place “发生”,指某项活动的举行、进行,强调经过安排或计划之后的情况。
eg: The 30th Olympic Games will take place in London in 2012.
happen也可表示“发生”,是一般用语,指具体事物偶然发生,或指不能预料的情况的发生,后接不定式时有“碰巧;恰好”之意。eg: Where did the accident happen / occur?
occur以上两层含义都有。
注:take place和happen都不能用于被动语态。

lead… to “领往;通往;导致”,其中to是介词,后接名词。

1. A rich person gives you a large amount of money to use as you like.What will you do? (P17)
amount n. 通常用amount of sth“数量;数额”,一般修饰不可数名词,作主语时谓语动词用单数形式。
eg: The amount of the money that he has wasted is about $10,000.
a large amount of与a large number of都可表示“大量的”,但前者修饰不可数名词;而后者修饰可数名词,作主语时谓语动词用复数。eg: In fact, a large amount of fresh water is wasted.
A large number of issues have been raised at the meeting.
2. Permit me to lead the way, sir. (P17)
permit (1) vt. “允许;许可”,后接名词或代词;接动词时要用动词-ing形式,即permit doing sth;其后接复合宾语时,要用permit sb to do sth,表示“允许某人做某事”。eg: The guards permitted the prisoners three hours’ exercise a day.
We don’t permit taldly in the reading-room.
Her parents didn’t permit her to go to the concert by herself.
(2) n. “执照;许可证” permission是其名词形式,with / without sb’s permission = with / without the permission of sb表示“经过 / 未经某人允许”。eg: When the police asked him why he had a gun, he toot a permit to hunt.
With the teacher’s permission, she went home earlier than usual.
3. His eyes stare at what is left of the brothers’ dinner on the table. (P18)
stare vi. “盯;凝视”;表示“盯着……看”要用stare at sth
vt. 只能用在固定短语中 eg: The old man was staring, thinking.
Do you like being stared at in public?
Don’t stare him in the face. He is a little nervous.
stare at与 glare at的区别:
stare at表示因吃惊、害怕或深思而张大眼睛看,常译作“盯着看;凝视“; glare at表示由于气愤张大眼睛用强烈的目光看,常译作“怒目而视”。 eg: Suddenly he saw two eyes glaring at him out of the darkness.
4. The next morning I’d just about given myself up for lost when I was spotted by a ship.(P18)
spot (1) vt. “发觉;找出”,其后可接that从句,也可以用spot sth doing sth。
eg: He spotted a friend in the street and went over to her.
No one spotted that the bank-note was fake.
Neighbours spotted smoke coming out of the house.
(2) n. “污点;地点”。 eg: How can I get rid of the spots on my clothes?
This is the very spot where the accident happened.
5. Patience, Mr Adams. (P18)
patience n. [U] “忍耐力;耐心”,with patience“耐心地”;have no patience with…“对……忍无可忍”。
eg: I will be through with it in a little while. Have a little patience.

surround vt.&vi. “包围;围绕;环绕”,常用固定搭配surround sth / sb (with sth);be surrounded with / by sth“周围都是……”。eg: In the past, people generally surrounded the castle with a high wall.

2. Most Canadians live within 320 kilometres of the USA border, and in fact, the population of Canada is only slightly over thirty million. (P34)
within prep. “在……之内”,可表示时间、距离、空间、能力等的范围。
eg: There is no school within three miles of the village.
3. In the distance, they could see the misty cloud that rose from the great Niagara Falls, which is on the south side of the lake. (P38)
distance n. “距离;远方”,其形容词是distant。
in the distance “在远处;在远方”;within walking distance of“到……的距离很近,走路就可以到”
eg: The shop is within walking distance of my house.

broad adj. “宽阔的;广泛的”,一般强调幅面宽广,并常用来修饰人的肩、背、胸的宽;wide强调距离宽,如两岸间的河宽,眼睛睁得大等。eg: Ted had broad shoulders.
