Graham and his friends preferred to shoot up in their arms, necks and legs. A dealer once said Graham was the type who would never be able to turn back and that he expected him to die from the drug. Wendy feared the same, but didn’t know how to save her son. “ Once, after he’d disappeared for more than a month, I found him at a friend’s house with a bunch of other users,” she said, “I got down on my hands and knees, begging him to come home. He did, but the next morning he was gone. I don’t know what made him do it, but I drove 20 miles to the nearest train station. Graham was headed for Seattle, his pocll of drugs. If I hadn’t gotten there in time, I would never have seen him alive again.”
The turning point came in 2007, after Graham was arrested yet again for possession. Wendy got a call from the Montana Drugs Project, which works with local law enforcement(强制执行) to keep tracth-related crimes so it can help families in trouble. Following a counselor’s advice, Wendy hired two men to come to her home in the middle of the night, tie Graham and take him to a treatment program in Thompson Falls, Montana. “I was high when they came and really angry with my mom,” he said, “But if she hadn’t done that, drugs would have killed me.” After six months of treatment, Graham, now 19, came back to Kalispell, where he’s grown close to Wendy once again. “I still have the desires every day and attend support meetings every night,” he said, “But life is worth living again. My mom thinks that’s a miracle. I guess she is right.”

As the population of the planet increases, so does the number of homes, businesses, parking lots, schools, airports and roadways. All these structures use electricity and need to be lighted. Humans demand these lights. They want their homes more comfortable and they want their streets safe. The problem is that researchers are finding that all the light is having a negative effect on humans and wildlife as well.
Less than 10 years ago I drove to a thinly populated section of my town, lay down in the middle of the road and watched an attractive meteor shower (流星雨). The area was short of homes, street lights and traffic. If I did that today, I wouldn't be able to see the meteor shower as well. Due to the increase in street lights, I would surely be run over by a car.
Nowadays scientists are finding light pollution can be almost as bad as carbon dioxide pollution. If you've ever taken a flight at night, the view is beautiful, but you must remember that all the light you see wastes electricity. The crew of the space shuttles see an even bigger picture of how extensive the wasted electricity is worldwide.
One of the saddest parts of light pollution is that most of it is unnecessary and mA
John Harrison has what must be the most wanted job in the United States. He’s the official taster for Edy’s Grand Ice Cream, one of the nation’s best-selling brands. Harrison’s taste buds(味蕾)are insured for $ 1 million. He gets to try 60 ice creams a day. And when he isn’t doing that, he travels, buying Edy’s in supermarkets all over the country so that he can check for perfect appearance and flavor.
After I interviewed Harrison, I realized that the life of an ice cream taster isn’t all Cookies‘n’Cream-a wonderful flavor that he invented. No, it’s extremely hard work, which requires self-control and selflessness.
For one thing, he doesn’t swallow on the job. Like a coffee taster, Harrison spits. Using a gold spoon to avoid“off”flavors, he takes a small bite and moves it around in his mouth to introduce it to all 9,000 or so taste buds. Next he opens his mouth to get some air into the ice cream. Then he breathes in gently to bring the aroma(香味)of the ice cream up through the back of his nose. Each step helps Harrison assess whether the ice cream has a good balance of dairy, sweetness, and added ingredients. Then, even if the ice cream tastes heavenly, he puts it into a trash can.
During the workweek, Harrison told me that he has to make other sacrifices, too: no onions, garlic, and no caffeine(咖啡因). Caffeine will affect the taste buds, he said, so his breakfast is a cup of tea. This is a small price to pay for what he calls the world’s best job.
Harrison’s family has been in the ice cream business in one way or another for four generations, so Harrison has spent his entire life with it. However, he has never lost his love for its cold, creamy sweetness. He even orders ice cream in restaurants for dessert.
1. What is special about Harrison’s job?
A. He buys ice cream for his customers. B. He invents a lot of new ice creams.
C. His daily task is to taste ice cream. D. His work is related to insurance.
2. The author develops the third paragraph mainly .
A. by classification B. by comparison C. by importance D. by process
3. The underlined part“a small price”in the fourth paragraph means that .
A. Harrison must travel around the country a lot
B. Harrison’s taste buds have been affected by caffeine
C. Harrison avoids some kinds of food and drink for his work
D. Harrison must order ice cream for dessert when eating in restaurants
4. What is the text mainly about?
A. An ice cream taster’s job. B. How to taste an ice cream.
C. A famous ice cream brand. D. How ice creams are invented.

Driving to a friend’s house on a recent evening, I was attracted by the sight of the full moon rising just above my friend’s rooftop. I stopped to watch it for a few moments, thinking about what a pity it is that most city people --- myself included --- usually miss sights like this because we spend most of our lives indoors.
My friend had also seen it. He grew up living in a forest in Europe, and the moon meant a lot to him then. It had touched much of his life.
I know the feeling. Last December I took my seven-year-old daughter to the mountainous jungle of northern India with some friends. We stayed in a forest rest house with no electricity or running hot water. Our group had campfires outside every night, and indoors when it was too cold outside. The moon grew to its fullest during our trip. Between me and the high mountains lay three or four valleys. Not a light shone in them and not a sound could be heard. It was one of the quietest places I have ever known, a bottomless well of silence. And above me was the full moon, which struck me deeply.
Today our lives are filled with glass, metal, plastic and fiber-glass. We have television, cell phones, electricity, heaters and ovens and air-conditioners, cars, computers.
Struggling through traffic that evening at the end of a tiring day, most of it spent indoors, I thought, “Before long, I would like to live in a small cottage. There I will grow vegetables and read books and walk in the mountains. And perhaps write, but not in anger. I may become an old man there, and wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled and measure out my life in coffee spoons. But I will be able to waltside on a cold silent night and touched the moon.”
1. The best title for the passage would be _________.
A. Break away from Modern life B. Touched by the Moon

2. The writer felt sorry for himself because __________.
A. there was too much pollution.
B. there were too many accidents on the road.
C. he failed to see the fullest moon.
D. he didn’t adapt to modern inventions
3. Modern things are mentioned mainly to ___________.
A. show that the writer likes city life very much.
B. explain that people have less chances to e
