An innovative floating dam that traps plastic bags, bottles and other pieces polluting the world's oceans will be tested in the North Sea for the first time in 2016. The Ocean Cleanup Organization plans to install this revolutionary 328-foot-long barrier in the summer, off the coast of the Netherlands.
Compared to other cleanup methods, Ocean Cleanup's barrier uses currents to passively ensnare(诱导) waves of garbage, while allowing fish and other sea creatures through, according to a news release. Researchers have tested the floating dams using extensive computer modeling and scale model in controlled environments. Since they have proved successful, engineers believe it is time to move the barrier to the next stage of development: open waters.
Each arm of floating dam has a screen that hangs 10 feet below the water's surface, blocking waste and directing it to a central point where it can be collected for recycling. Cameras and sensors will regularly monitor the motions of the barrier and the loads on the system. That way researchers can better assess if their design can be used to clean up the world's oceanic garbage patches(补丁).
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch spans waters from the West Coast of North America to Japan. Strong currents draw large amounts of plastic debris to this area. Pending this floating dam is successful, researchers hope to make a 62 mile-long V-shaped barrier in this area in 2020.
"Taking care of the world's ocean garbage problem is one of the largest environmental challenges mankind faces today," Dutch innovator Boyan Slat said. "Not only will this first cleanup task contribute to cleaner waters and coasts but it is an essential step towards our goal of cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. "

When international students arrive on campus, they are amazed at invitations to a variety of welcome events. The first few weeks are jam packed with opportunities to meet new people: both international students and locals. You probably are aware that there will be cultural differences, however most people don’t realize that one of the biggest differences may be when it comes to eating. American dining habits are quite different than many other countries abroad, so here’s a little preview of what to expect.
In many countries lunch time is a sacred meal; a time when families come together to eat a hearty meal. However, as you will soon notice, lunch is not the most important meal of the day in the US. For most people lunch time is squeezed in where it can be, the 30 minutes given to them by their job or before their next class. It is quite common to see people eating outside, wherever they can, or even having food with them to snacring the day.
Another big shock for many when they arrive to the US is the “doggy bag” culture. “doggy bag” culture refers to the fact that when you go out to eat a restaurant and do not finish your meal (because the portions are huge!) you can ask for a box to take the leftover food home.
Although the idea of tipping is supposed to be an act of generosity, in the US it is an act of generosity that is expected. If you have found your favorite restaurant near campus and want to become a regular, mare to tip at every visit or you may not get the best service the next time you go. It is important to note that at fast food restaurants tips are not expected, it is usually at any sit-down restaurant.
29. According to Paragraph 1, international students arrive on campus in the US may feel .
A. surprised B. nervous C. embarrassed D. upset
30. What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A. Most American people consider lunchtime serious.
B. Most American people are too busy to have a good meal.
C. Many people in other countries have a quick meal during lunchtime.
D. Americans eating on the street or eating on the go is common.
31. What does the “doggy bag” culture mean?
A. Eating less when you are in a hurry.
B. Culture shock is like a big bag.
C. Tanfinished food home.
D. Bring a bag while eating.
D
Many people think they should wait until they have free time before they get into a new hobby, but I think that’s a mistake. There are many benefits for already having an established hobby when you retire. Here’s why you shouldn’t wait until retirement to figure out how you will spend your time.
Interest in a new hobby might not be sustainable. You may find you don’t actually want to spend as much of your retirement time with the activity as you first thought. I've done many activities in my life, including baseball, soccer, biking, golf and many more. Only a few of these will remain my hobbies in retirement.
I like going to the golf course and hearing the sound of the ball going in the cup, but it takes me a few years of consistently playing to realize that I enjoy the game more when I don't play that often. When I play too much, I tend to lose focus. I just don’t try as hard, because the score doesn't matter to me as much as when I frequently play the same holes.
It’s easier to switch hobbies when you have a job. Switching hobbies is often expensive. When I first got into road biking, I knew about the costs of the bike and helmet. But that’s just the beginning of the costs of being a road bike owner. The costs of a nice road bike alone can be thousands of dollars. There was so much I needed to buy just to get the bike going, and then I needed water bottles while I rode.
I still love biking, and one of the main reasons is due to its health benefits. But if I started after I retired, I don’t know if there would be enough in the budget to try a new hobby like this.
32.What does the author want to say in the passage?
A.Develop a hobby before you retire.
B.Save plenty of money for your future.
C.Live a free and happy life when you retire.
D.Enjoy the benefits of your hobbies.
33.Which can replace the underlined word “sustainable”?
A.defensible B.continual C.available D.accessible
34.If you often play football, you will .
A.take the game lightly in a way
B.play better than anyone else
C.realize the importance of the game
D.focus much more attention on it
35.What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?
A.Road biking isn’t suitable for the retired.
B.The author wasted too much on his hobby.
C.Developing a hobby means a sum of money.
D.It is not a good idea to change your hobby.

Things You Didn't Know About Stephen Hawking
Even if you don't keep a close eye on new developments in physics, you've probably heard of the famous physicist Stephen Hawking. 36
These days, we know Hawking as a brilliant mind whose theories are difficult for a nonscientific mind to grasp. This is why it may come as a shock to learn that Hawking was a slacker when it came to his school studies.
37 With a little more effort, he brought those grades up to about average, but not much better. However, from an early age he was interested in how things worked. He has talt how he was known to take apart clocks and radios. However, he admits he wasn't very good at putting them back together so they could work again.
Stephen Hawking took a liking to mathematics from an early age, and he would have liked to have majored in it. 38 He hoped Stephen would instead study medicine.
But, for all his interest in science, Stephen didn't care for biology. He has said that he found it to be "too inexact, too descriptive(叙述的)". 39
One problem, however, was that Oxford didn't have mathematics as a major. The result was that Stephen would attend Oxford and major in physics. 40 That’s why he chose to study universe.
A. His father wanted to send him to Oxford.
B. His father, Frank, however, had different ideas.
C. Actually, he focused on the bigger questions.
D. He would have rather devoted his mind to more precise concepts.
E. In fact, when he was 9, his grades ranked among the worst in his class.
F. However, there’re many interesting facts you might not know about him.
G. Both his teachers and peers seemed to understand that they had a future genius.
