“Plants were expected to get larger with increased carbon dioxide in atmosphere, but changes in temperature, humidity and nutrient availability seem to trumped the benefits of increased carbon dioxide,” said researchers from the National University of Singapore.
45 percent of the species studied now reach smaller adult sizes than they did in the past. The researchers pointed out that warmer temperatures and changing habitats, caused by climate change, are possible reasons for shrinking creatures.
“We do not yet know the mechanisms involved, or why some organism are getting smaller while others are unaffected,” the researchers said. “Until we understand more, we could be risking negative consequences that we can't yet quantify.”
The change was big in cold¬blooded animals. Only two decades of warmer temperatures were enough to make reptiles smaller. An increase of 1 degree centigrade caused nearly a 10 percent increase in metabolism (新陈代谢). Greater use of energy resulted in tiny tortoises and little lizards. Fish are smaller now too. Though overfishing has played a part in reducing numbers, experiments show that warmer temperatures also stop fish growth. There is a recent report on warmer temperatures' negative effects on plankton, the base of the marine ecosystem.
Warm¬blooded animals weren't immune from the size change caused by climate change. Many birds are now smaller. Mammals have been miniaturized too. Soay sheep are thinner. Red deer are weaker. And polar bears are smaller, compared with historical records.
This is not the first time this has happened in Earth's history. 55 million years ago, a warming event similar to the current climate change caused bees, spiders and ants to shrink by 50 to 75 percent over several thousand years. That event happened over a long time than the current climate change.

Chinese writer Mo Yan’s Nobel Prize for Literature might ignite an explosion of global interest in Chinese literature and lead to more titles translated into English,European experts say.
“Hopefully, the award means more people will read Chinese literature and more works will get translated,” says Michel Hockx, professor of the Languages and Cultures of China and Inner Asia from University of London.“Many very good Chinese writers have been accepted globally for a long time already.Mo Yan is probably the most translated Chinese writer alive, with at least five of his novels made available in English over the past 20 years.”
Jonathan Ruppin, web editor of bookseller Foyles, says Mo’s win coincides with growing interest in Chinese literature and recognizes the talents of a distinctive and visionary (富于幻想的) writer.“We are very excited by the fact that English translations of more of his books should now become available,” Ruppin says.He made the comment after Mo became the first Chinese citizen to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in its centurylong history.
As EastWest cultural exchange has been booming,Chinese literature has been attracting growing attention in recent years.Hockx explains,“It’s mainly because there are many more opportunities for Chinese writers to visit other countries,to publish their wortside China and to interact with readers abroad. At the same time, more and more people globally are learning Chinese and taking an interest in the Chinese language and culture.”

Chelyabinsssia—A meteorite (陨石) moved quickly across the sky and exploded over central Russia on Feb.15,2013,raining fireballs over a vast area and causing a shock wave that smashed windows, damaged buildings and injured 1,200 people.
People heading to work in Chelyabinsk heard what sounded like an explosion, saw a bright light and then felt the shock wave, according to a Reuters journalist in the industrial city 1,500 km east of Moscow.
The fireball, travelling at a speed of 30 km per second according to Russian space agency Roscosmos, had blazed (熊熊燃烧) across the horizon, leaving a long white trail that could be seen as far as 200 km away.
Car alarms went off, thousands of windows were broken and mobile phone networks were interrupted for a short time. The Interior Ministry said the meteorite explosion,a very rare spectacle, also released a great explosive sound.
“I was driving to work.It was quite dart it suddenly became bright as if it were day,” said Viktor Prokofiev,36,a resident of Yekaterinburg in the Urals Mountains.“I felt like I was blinded by headlights.”
The meteorite, which weighed about 10 tonnes and may have been made of iron, entered Earth’s atmosphere and broke apart 30 km50 km above ground according to Russia’s Academy of Sciences.
“The energy released when it entered the Earth’s atmosphere was equal to a few kilotonnes,” the academy said,“the power of a small atomic weapon exploding.”
