When I was nineteen years old,I was at a dance club and met a new friend who walked with me to my car.We were in downtown Seattle and it was a very cold night. As we were walking to my car,a man walp to us.Behind him was a woman pushing a stroller with a child inside who was about one year old.The child had a jacket on but it wasn’t zipped (拉上拉链).The man told us that he wanted to borrow some money to get his wife and kid into a hotel for the night. He had a job but no place to live in and was waiting for his first salary. He said he could get our mailing address and mail the money bacs.
The guy I was with reached into his pocket to give this man a $20 bill.As the man was extending his hand out to take the money,I put my hand on my friend’s hand and said,“Can I tal for a minute?” Then I told him some people earned money by begging. They cheated those warm-hearted people. And if they were truly worried about their child being out of the cold, they would have at least zipped his jacket.
My friend looked at me and said,“Michael,I know there are some people who take advantage of others.I also know some people out there that are one paycheck away from being homeless. If I give $20 to 10 people and only one of them really needs it and uses it for the right thing,it is worth it.”
I am now thirty-seven years old and have never forgotten what my friend said to me.I don’t even remember his name now,but I do remember that experience changed my perspective (观点) and the way I look at different situations.

My mum is always at work and my sisters are never around,so I have nothing to do.My house is boring. The train lets me escape and explore.
I have been taking the train for five years.I’ve learned that it’s fast and convenient.I live about two miles from the Blue Line Imperial Station.I like taking the train because it gives me freedom.
My favourite place to go is downtown.I take the train to Macy’s Plaza in front of the 7th Street Station to do some shopping at Borders or Victoria’s Secret,or to get something to eat at the food court. With 25 cents, you can take the DASH bus from the station to get to the Fashion District.Since I like making accessories(首饰)like earrings,I love going there because of all the deals on jewellery supplies.
I take the train to the Museum of Contemporary Art with friends on the first Sunday of every month since we can get in for free.We tour around the museum and get to do an art project at the end.I like going to the museum because there are a lot of wonderful things.
The cool thing about the train is that it connects to other train lines, which lets you see different parts of the city. The Gold Line runs from Union Station northeast to Pasadena and then to East L.A.The Red Line goes from downtown to Hollywood. The Green Line goes from Norwalk to several beaches. When I don’t know how to get somewhere,I go to mta.net,type in my starting point and end point and get times and routes.I hardly ever get lost.

Most spiders build webs to trap other insects. But the trap-door spider has another way of hunting.First, she digs a hole about ten inches deep and an inch and a half wide.Next, she makes a lid (盖子) of dirt and webbing. This trap door must fit in the upper end of the hole like a cover fits in a bottle. Finally, the spider hides her nest(洞穴) by spreading dirt over the lid. Then the trap door looks like the earth around it.Sometimes she even plants small green plants on top.She is as sly as a fox.
The trap-door spider hunts at night. For hours, she stays hidden right below her nest. She holds it open just a narrow space as she waits for insects.
When something comes near her door, she can sense the movements above her nest. She pushes the lid open quict the trap door is so strong that she could be loct.So she leaves her hind legs and a part of her body under the open lid. Then the spider grabs the surprised insect in her mouth.Down they go into her nest. The trap-door spider does not need a web.

About five years ago I started at a new school when my family moved to Iowa.I was just a little excited, but I worried I would never fit in with the other sixth graders.
Lucy, a girl in my class, who I thought was not ready for change, didn’t like me from the start. In fact, I was pretty sure she hated me.I would ask her a question, and I could tell she thought I was a total fool.
My teacher made us sit by each other for the last term.Lucy was horrified (惊骇的).
I didn’t wear map (化妆品), and I didn’t wear those terrible bell-bottom pants.I didn’t exactly look like the coolest girl. But, I kept smiling at her, though she rolled her eyes, and I kept telling her she lootiful, even if she looked angry.
In the end, Lucy let me talk to her, even in sight of her “cool” friends. She started telling me how beautiful I looked.I still remember that the first time when she smiled at me saying that, and I smiled right back, telling her thancy invited me to her house for a pa
