My mother was a therapist(治疗专家). Well, technically she was a hairdresser, but in reality she was a therapist. I grew up in the salon(美容店),sitting on the chairs after school, listening to the ladies talt their problems and watching my mother comb and listen. She gave every one of her customers her undivided attention. When they were in the chair, she was theirs. They told her stories of cancer, marriages and everything in between. As a child, I found it strange that these women would talk so openly to my mother about such deeply personal matters.
I remember once listening to one of my mother’s customers talking to her about some financial problems she and her husband were having . In the break room later that afternoon, I made some comments about it to my mother. I do not remember what I said but I clearly remember her response, “When people share their lives with you, it means they trust you. Trust is more important than money.” At the time, I had no idea what she meant.
My mother died on February 14th, 1999. It was a simple burial(葬礼). But there is one image that stands clear in my mind: the sea of faces at the service. There must have been over a hundred people that day. Among them was a man, whose wife used to be one of my mother’s customers. He came because of the special care my mother provided for his wife when she was dying of cancer. I did not find out until years later that my mother went to the hospital every morning for months to wash her, do her map and get her ready to face another day.
My mother was a hairdressers. She had a 4th grade education. In her lifetime, she didn’t earn millions of dollars and was not successful by today’s standards. But in my mind, she is one of the most successful women I know.

This is the VOA Special English Education Report. A few weeks ago, we talt the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL. A listener in Cambodia named Thida asks if American colleges and universities also accept the IELTS(雅思) exam. IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It was developed by the University of Cambridge ESOL examiners.
Cambridge ESOL says the test measures true-to-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration or employment. The IELTS tests listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. It uses a mixture of accents and spellings, including British English and American English.
The test is used by government agencies, schools and professional organizations in one hundred and twenty countries. And, yes, that includes the United States. Many American schools that accepted the IELTS can be found on the Web at felts. org.
Some schools accept both the TOEFL and the IELTS, but the graduate school at Duniversity in Durham, North Carolina, for example, says it prefers the IELTS.
The listening and speaking parts are the same for everyone who takes the IELTS, but people have a choice of reading and writing tests — either academic or general training.
The listening test takes thirty minutes. There are forty questions based on a recording. The reading test takes sixty minutes. Students answer forty questions based on three written passages.
The writing test also takes sixty minutes. Students have to write two essays. One essay has to be at least one hundred and fifty words long and the other at least two hundred and fifty words. The shorter one is description of something; the longer one has to support and argue.
The speaking test takes less than fifteen minutes. The score is based on a recorded talk between the student and a test examiner.
And that's the VOA Special English Education Report, written by Nancy Steinbach. If you have a general question for our series, write to special@ voanews. com. I'm Barbara Klein.
