亚洲沙尘暴的发生频率,50年来已增加5倍,沙尘所挟带的污染物和有毒重金属,对环境和人体健康造成影响。沙尘暴转趋频繁,是全球自然灾害日增大趋势的一部分。
中国的沙尘暴发生频率在过去50年里增长5倍,上世纪50年代是5次、60年代是8次、70年代是14次、80年代是15次、90年代则达到24次。
沙尘暴引起高度关切的一个重要原因,是它在经过中国北部工业区上空时,会吸入铅等有毒重金属微粒。这种有毒沙尘会引发呼吸系统疾病,对老人和儿童甚至有致命危险。根据估计,沙尘暴每年造成的综合经济损失可达65亿美元。

Today we tap Module 3 The Violence of Nature.
Throughout history there have been sudden, terrible events that have shaken the world. Sometimes they are man-made, ranging from the infamous sinking of the Titanic to the deadly Chernobyl meltdown of 1986, while others are natural disasters, such as the catastrophic eruption of the island of or the devastating Tokyo earthquake of 1923.
Before we read What Is a Tornado?… let’s have a brief review of the 21st century disasters we have experienced so far.
