  ■ To practice reading for specific information.
  ■ To practice using relative clauses with when, where and why.
  ■ To practice using relative clauses with prepositions and relative pronouns.
  ■ To review and consolidate the relative pronouns.
  ■ To talt explorers.
  Possible problems
  ■ Students may have trouble choosing the most appropriate prepositions to go with their relative pronouns;
  ■ Students may be confused about the uses of 'where' and 'from where' in introducing relative clauses.
  Bacnd
  Viking is the name for the group of Scandinavian people who sailed in ships to attack areas along the coasts of northern and western Europe from the 8th to 11th centuries.
  Eric the Red (950?-1003 or 1004) was a Viking explorer who was the first European in Greenland. He led a group of colonists to Greenland in 986.

  . If you are short of time, set Exercise 12 for homework;
  . If you have time, add more questions for Exercise 5 for students to voice their opinions and more exercise for Exercise 6 to practice using the vocabulary;
  . If you have two lessons for a unit, a suitable natural break is after exercise 6.

  Reading
  Before you start
  Exercise 1
  ■ Student discuss who arrived in America first, using their knowledge from history class.
  ■ Students then discuss other people they know, who have lived or arrived in America.
  Exercise 2
  ■ In pairs, students guess the meaning of the words listed and match them with the correct definition. Then if possible, eliore discussion about these places.
  ■ Predict what the text is about with the information they have got.
