A. can’t make it B. mustn’t have made
C. won’t make D. couldn’ t have made it

It must have rained last night, for the ground is wet.
He can't have finished the work so soon.
They may not have known it beforehand.
I needn't have bought so much wine—only five people came.
5.“should / ought to + have + 过去分词”表示过去本该做某事但没做,其否定式表示过去不该做某事但做了,这种句式含有不满或责备之意,ought to的语气比should强一些.如:
You ought to / should have studied harder.
He oughtn't to / shouldn't have done that.
I guess the poet would have been about twenty when she wrote her first poem.
Another worldn't have acted like that.

A. so as to not; of B. in order to not; for

so as not to do sth 表示“以便不做某事”.be blamed for sth 表示“因某事受责备”.what he had done 是介词宾语从句,表示“他做的事”。故选C。
13. I am sorry I am very busy now. If I time, I would certainly go to the movies with you.
A. have B. had
C. have had D. had had
14. On the bus I saw a student I believed was your brother.
A. who B. whom
C. which D. whoever
【答案】A
选A。
15. —He is good at a lot of things but it doesn’t mean he is perfect.
— ___________ Actually no one is.
A. What’s going on? B. Let’s get going.
C. Thank goodness. D. I’m with you on that.
I’m with you on that是同意你的说法的意思。 What’s going on?

In response to this cultural environment, businessman and writer D.F. Whipple, decided to set up the New Hope film festival and became active on January 1, 2009. I was travelling by the West Coast Express to Mangalore two years ago. Berth(铺位)No. 55, not far from me, was occupied by a middle-aged gentleman. When the train reached Palanction around 9:00 p.m., a large group of tourists entered with much noise. Just then another middle-aged man from the group declared that he owned Berth 55. He even had a paper given by his travel agent to support himself.
The ticket examiner arrived and told the second man that it was not his berth. “No,” said the second man. “It’s mine.” A policeman from the Railway Protection tried to get the second man leave. But he wouldn’t give in---- and he had the support of his companions.
Fierce argument continued, even long after the train left Palakkad. Then someone even pulled the emergency chain(应急链) as we were leaving Tirur station, four stops after Palakkad. Nobody could sleep and it was getting late.
Suddenly, around midnight, I watched a teenager, a student I am sure, climbed down from an upper berth close to me. “Please take my berth,” he told the second man, who accepted it after a bit of hesitation.
To my great surprise, the student then spread a newspaper on the floor and was soon lost in deep and peaceful sleep. By now everyone was quiet, as if nothing had happened!I’m a 58-year-old biology teacher who has handled two recent generations of students. I was convinced once again that, contray to popular opinions, young people can often be far, far nobler than many older ones. And that’s the hope of our nation.
41. Where did the author spend the night when the arguments happened?
A. At home. B. In a hotel.

C. The middle-aged gentleman. D. The second man.
43. Faced with the two men’s arguments, the passengers were .
A. courious B. excited
C. angry D. puzzled
44. Why was everyone quiet after the arguments?
A. They were too sleepy in fact.
B. They were afraid to speak anything.
C. They were tired from hard work.
D. They reached their destination.
45. Reading the passage gives readers a sense of .
A. encouragement B. responsibility

It's hair-raising news for criminals on the run. Scientists behind a new study have wort how to identify individuals only based on the proteins(蛋白质) in a single strand of their hair.
While the police already look at DNA from hair as part of investigations, the technique is far from ideal: DNA is easily degradable, meaning it can only be analyzed within a certain time period after the crime. But the new technique could even be used to solve historical or archaeological cases, making it far superior to DNA sequencing in many ways.
DNA degradation depends on several environmental factors including temperature, humidity and PH. It is also affected by the activity of bacteria and other microorganisms. In contrast, actual hairs can survive for a long time-----sometimes centuries. After bones and teeth, hair is in fact one of the most resistant structures of the human body.
In order to understand how the protein can be used to identify individuals, it is important to understand mat proteins are coded by DNA. This means that a certain level of the genetic variation that we see in different people's DNA passes into their proteins. In fact, genetic information in the DNA is translated into amino-acid chains that map proteins.
The method not only allows for human identification but it can also reveal how old the sample is and what region it comes from, so that we can distinguish between current and ancient samples. But while the discovery is exciting, the technique is not quite polished enough to be used in the court room. The main task now will be to analyze hair samples from all over the world, which will make it a lot more reliable.
The new discovery will boost the significance of hair as evidence in courts, at a time when some forensic(司法鉴定的) disciplines have been criticized in the US. It will also be of great use in archaeology.

48. In what way is the new technique superior to DNA test?
A. Serving as evidence in courts.
B. Possessing genetic information.
C. Inferring the height of a person.
D. Distinguishing the region of a person.
49. What will scientists do in the following few years?
A. Test hair samples worldwide. B. Legalize the hair evidence.
C. Apply protein-test to archaeology. D. Map the structure of DNA.
50. Who will welcome the discovery?

Rather than rolling your eyes when it’s your turn to bow your head and give thanks, try being grateful. The result just might be good for you, from improving your feeling to your relationships. If you don’t want to voice your gratitude, writing a letter may work, according to various studies by Steve Toepfer of Kent State University and his colleagues.
Toepfer and his colleagues had 219 students with an average age of 25 fill out questionnaires(问卷)to measure their happiness. They returned to the lab to fill out the survey three more times, with each visit about a week apart. Some of the students wrote a letter of gratitude each time they returned to the lab, while the control group didn’t write about being thankful.
“The letter writers were instructed to write a letter of gratitude to anyone they wanted, however, the letter couldn’t be a‘than’note for a gift,” Toepfer said. “The participants had to write about something that was important to them.”
The results showed that their levels of happiness and life satisfaction improved after each letter they wrote. In addition, depressive symptoms decreased over time with the letter writing.
Gratitude doesn’t just cheer you up—it can improve your health and energy levels as well. A 2007 study conducted by researchers found that organ-transplant(器官移植) receivers who kept “gratitude journals” listing five things or people that they were grateful for each day scored better on measures of general health, and mental health than those who only made routine notes about their days.
A successful relationship may depend on your gratitude. Research reported in 2011 looking at more than 65 couples who were in satisfying relationships showed that each couple’s relationship quality corresponded with one partner’s feelings of gratitude. Researchers show that one partner expressed feelings of gratitude; both partners experienced a positive emotional response.

Moksh Jawa, 16, a student in the second year at Washington High School in the US, has already become a legend among students. “Why not?” might be his favorite question to ask.
His high school didn’t teach coding. As a sophomore in this school, he developed his own online course and helped his classmates get through it while a student in higher grades enen couldn’t do like him.
Everything he did came from his own interest. “I just fell in love with computer science,” Jawa said. Along the way, he lit a fire of curiosity and passion among classmates to learn coding too.
“All of my friends, especially the girls, were really, really afraid of computer science,” he said. But the subject and exam weren’t things to be feared, he said. “Computer science is all about logic (逻辑), not about how smart you are.”
To make his knowledge available online, Jawa set about creating his own online course, with easy-to-follow lessons.
The course has so far attracted 3,200 students across the US and in 120 countries and regions, including China, Ukraine and Algeria. It shows, Jawa said, the huge need for coding lessons.
When video lecturing, “I deliver it like I’m talking from one high school student to another,” Jawa said. “It’s always great to make it as clear and fun as possible, and to try to keep my voice as energetic as possible.”
He also does that, when teaching members of the computer science club he founded at his high school.
“His tutorials (辅导) were great,” said junior Taj Shaik, the club’s co-president, who took the whole course last year. “I’m definitely one of the early adopters of Moksh.”
“He’s pretty amazing,” said Bob Moran, principal of Washington High School, who saw him lead the club. “He was just a fantastic teacher – clear, organized and entertaining. When a student got the right answer, he would throw them a piece of candy.”
