A tiny island is like a world in miniature (缩影). Rapa island lies separately in the South Pacific, halfway between South America and New Zealand. Its first settlers turned to violence when faced with the pressures of the environment and competition.
Rapa is a very remote place, like another planet. When settlers arrived there, there was an immediate impact on the environment. With the population expanding, you can see the same thing on a larger scale today. It leads to social fighting.
The first people to live on Rapa arrived by boat in AD 1200. They at first set up camp in rock shelters along the coast and probably got along well with each other. The peace wouldn’t last. Rapa became fortified (设防的) about 300 years later. The island is 530 kilometers from its closest neighbor; those fortifications weren’t for outside invaders. The competition for resources led the people of Rapa to split into warring parts.
When the Polynesians arrived in Rapa, there was great erosion (削弱), clearing of the land and so on. They also brought things with them, like different crops and rats, as well as their main food of taro.
The date the settlers arrived is actually much later than what was considered before, meaning that their ancestors had hung up their long-distance boat paddles for about 1,500 years after settling westerly islands like Fiji and Tonga.
The same thing happened on those islands, but to a lesser degree. There were enough small places in the immediate area that people could move on rather than fight for resources only when other islands were exhausted (匮乏). They finally traveled to Rapa. About 2,000 people at the time were all forced to stay_put. There was just nowhere else to go — this was the end of the line.
1.The text says Rapa island is like a world in miniature because ________.
A.it has different forms of lands
B.it is an island in the South Pacific
C.it experienced the same problems as other parts
D.it is a wasted land at last
2.According to the text, we know about Rapa that ________.
A.it lies in the North Pacific
B.its closest neighbor is New Zealand

Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.
Before World War Ⅰ we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people’s observations and discoveries.  Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind.
Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist requires not only self-discipline, but hard training, determination and a goal. A scientist, up to a certain point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.
1.The first paragraph tells us the author ________.
A.was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood
B.lost his hearing when he was a child
C.didn’t like his brothers and sisters
  D.was born to a naturalist’s family
2.The author can’t remember his relatives clearly because ________.
A.he didn’t live very long with them
  B.the family was extremely large
C.he was too young when he lived with them
D.he was fully occupied with observing nature
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The author is a naturalist, but not a scientist.
B.The author is a scientist as well as a naturalist.
C.The author is first of all a scientist.

On the whole, it’s not something we shout about, but one in four of us does it. Hiring private tutors for our children is now widespread. And this year, as always, the Easter holidays will be peak time for tutor demand.
“My husband and I tried to tutor her at home, but we found all our knowledge was out of date and we were only confusing Zarreen. We also tried a group revision course but all the children were sitting exams for different boards (入学考试). On the whole, we think onetoone tuition works best and it is worth the money. In our case, Preeta is like an elder sister to Zarreen and that’s the most important,” says Ashan Sabri from London, whose daughter Zarreen, 18, is having tuition in biology and chemistry in preparation for A-levels this summer.
In fact, Preeta Datta is only six years older than her pupil and she is happy to provide extra tuition through mobile phone. “Zarreen will call me two or three times a week with a question about biology or chemistry, and that’s fine with me,” says Datta.
The real question is:does tutoring do any good?
“It’s not the magic bullet,” says educator Judith Ireson. “It’s still up to the child to do the learning. If he or she isn’t interested, then sending them to a private tutor won’t do any good.”
In this case, it’s time to break open the Champagne? “Not necessarily,” says Elaine Tyrrell, head of a private school.
“While we recommend private tutoring for children whose first language isn’t English, we don’t encourage it for the others,” says Tyrrell. “With the level of education they get here, children really ought to be able to pass the entrance exams. Besides, our biggest worry is that they might just get in with the help of lastminute tutoring, but, once they get to that school, they won’t be able to manage.”
It’s a point really worth considering. After all, who would want our child to stay at the bottom of the class?
1.The passage is most probably written by________.
  A.a parent
  B.a student
  C.a famous educator
D.a headmaster of a private school
My husband and I tried to tutor her可推出该文章很可能是由一位父母写的。
2.In Ashan Sabri’s opinion, which method is most suitable for her daughter?
A.Teaching her at home by herself.
  B.Taking different kinds of exams.
C.Taking part in group revision courses.
D.Finding a private tutor to help her.
由第二段的“On the whole, we think onetoone tuition works best and it is worth the money”可知。
3.About private tutoring, Judith Ireson points out one of its disadvantages that it________.
A.is expensive and the poor families might not be able to afford it
B.might make the children rely on their private tutors too much
C.won’t wort the children’s actual needs and active involvement
D.is not suitable for students who haven’t developed a certain level in selflearning
由文章第五段的“It’s still up to the child ... do any good.”
4.What attitude does the author hold towards home tutoring?
  A.Supportive. B.Critical.
