(2017·山西八校高三联考)I've been really lucky this year. Not only did I have the opportunity to live in France, but I was able to see some other countries with my girlfriend. Now she is studying in Essen,a large city in Western Germany.I recently went to stay with her—it was my first visit to Germany!Essen is a very large city.It has all the conveniences of any large city so I felt immediately at home.I loved the variety of shops, restaurants, shopping malls, cocktail bars, nightclubs, parks and even a lake. There is also a city-wide network of trams, which makes getting around a piece of cake!
I found the people to be really friendly, and most Germans speak very good English which made life easy for me.I was surprised by the casual attitude to alcohol in Germany, where it seems normal for people to drink beer on the street,or on the tram.My girlfriend and I visited two famous local cities,Düsseldorf and Cologne, which are both on the Rhine River.Düsseldorf is an urban metropolis with a great variety of restaurants. We took a boat tour on the river and went up the Rhine Tower,a really tall building which offers great views across the city.Cologne,as you might know,is world-famous for its perfumes. The cathedral there is an unmissable landmark. We made the effort to climb to the top of one of the cathedral's towers. The spiral (螺旋的) stairs seemed endless, but it was worthwhile for the impressive sights from the top.
We also went in a cable car over the river and tasted a German delicacy called “Spaghettieis” which is ice cream with strawberry sauce!I also got to try the famous German sausage.I must admit,I really enjoyed the food! The only disappointment was the grey and rainy weather, which proves that Britain does not have the worst weather in Europe!

(2017·四川绵阳二诊)With courses on David Beckham and Harry Potter on offer at famous universities,it comes as no surprise that students are now able to learn the art of the perfect selfie (自拍).
The concept of taking selfies gained great popularity. It soon exploded on the Internet, and people started crazily to take images that had them as the primary item of focus. The trend became so popular that it even inspired a song,“Selfie” by The Chainsmokers, which racp 267 million views on YouTube. In fact,Twitter declared 2014 as “the year of the selfie”.
Just like the art of photography can be studied and improved,City Literary Institute,a well-known college in London, felt it needed to educate people on the fine art of taking the perfect selfie and officially started to offer a first-ever course on that.
The four-session course will cost £132 (£106 for seniors),but the fee won't even include a free selfie-stick,a tool that is rapidly gaining acceptance for serious selfie-takers.It is open to all enthusiastic and self-obsessed photographers.
As part of the new course,self-absorbed photographers will be taught “valuable life skills” to prepare themselves to face a world which could present a photo opportunity at any point.Apart from offering the much-needed but seldom-sought guidance on the best angles and lighting, the course promises to improve your critical understanding of the “selfie”.There will also be a brief exploration into the concepts of “identity,self-hood and memory” as well as the opportunity to “develop new ideas to mar photography more relevant to your aims”.
But the selfie enthusiasts must be prepared to share their photos,as organizers said a critique (评论) of students' world form an important role in the learning process.

(2017·潍坊高三统考)“There's a mother in PICU (儿童重症监护病房) who wants to talt a kit she received,” the nurse told me.“Something about it made her cry.”
I've been a child-life specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital since 2000.I help families understand diagnoses and treatment plans and manage the ups and downs that come with caring for a sick child.Tough talks with parents are part of the job, which still makes me feel nervous.
The kits the nurse was talking about were something I had recently introduced to the hospital:Comfort Kits from Guideposts. They were supposed to make a child's experience here easier, not upsetting.
When I came across the kits at a conference,I fell in love with them.A treasure box of items designed not only to entertain t to comfort and inspire them. There's a coloring book,a stress ball,a CD of relaxing music,a hairy star named Sparkle,a journal and much more.I really believed these ld help kids.I wished I hadn't been mistaken.
At the patient's room in PICU I saw a little girl, sleeping soundly, surrounded by tubes and machines. My eyes met her mother's.The kit was open on her lap and tears were running down her cheeks.
“I'm Shannon.I manage the Child Life Department,”I said.“I'm sorry if the pset you. It's a new item...”
The mother shook her head.“This has been one of the worst days of my life.I felt so scared and alone. Then I was handed this box.I know it's for my daughter, but it's just the comfort I needed.I wanted to say than.”
With that I knew Comfort Kits belonged here. We've been using them for almost three years now. Each child who's admitted to the hospital receives one.Every day I see kids coloring, journaling, playing with Sparkle.
But as this mom showed me Comfort Kits aren't just for kids. The hope they bring,which_can_be_in_short_supply_in_hospitals_sometimes,is felt by the whole family.
