When he thought of the past,my grandfather would sometimes show us photographs of himself at school. They were brown and faded, and it was hard to believe that the blurred figure of the little boy in the short trousers and socld ever have been Grandfather.Besides,he wore a cap—and the boys in the photographs wore caps pulled so far forward that half of their faces were obscured. When Grandfather ass to pict from the group,we would surely point to the wrong boy.
On one such occasion my younger sister, aged six, burst into tears when Grandfather proudly guided her finger to the right boy.“How could that boy be you?”she cried.“He should have a heard.”We were,of course, all convinced that grandfathers should have beards, preferably white and bushy, like our own grandfather's.
“I was a good scholar,”Grandfather would say, wagging his beard over the photographs.“I should have been top of the class if I hadn't had to get up at six every morning to milk the cows and chop the wood, and again when I came home from school.”
“But Saturdays? What did you do on Saturdays?”
“Saturdays,if it was fine,I'd be out all day in the fields with the men,”replied Grandfather. “And if it was wet,I'd be helping my mother with odd jobs round the house. There wasn't much time for studying.”
We all tried hard to imagine what it would have been like to have been Grandfather getting up at crack of dawn and never, obviously, having a moment for himself. It seemed we had learnt something from what

In presentday China,we can find two types of fast food—western food and Chinese food. However, not until the recent decade has western fast food become popular in China. Before the first hamburger walked its way into the Chinese food market,we had little idea about such terms as hot dogs, pizza, potato chips, let alone KFC and McDonald's.It is the reform and openingup policy that has brought about the interflow of the food culture between China and the western countries.
Fast food, both Chinese food and western food, has several advantages. In the first place, fast food,as is characterized by its name,is fast. The food is always ready and fresh, waiting for its customers. This saves people's precious time, and consequently goes well with the tempo of life in modern society.
Secondly,it is very convenient. As we know, fast food restaurants are much the same as cafeterias.Customers may feel free to help themselves to any variety provided and eat to their hearts' content.
Thirdly, fast food restaurants are environmentally comfortable.Clean dishes, shiny tables, decent service and light music all stimulate people's appetite to eat more.
The above mentioned advantages make fast food become rooted in almost all parts of the country and enjoy popularity among people. That's also why nowadays Singapore fast food,Turkish fast food and IndiaPakistan fast food have found their homes in China.
As every coin has two sides, fast food also has its disadvantages such as lactrition and dull taste.Nevertheless, these are minor points compared with its advantages.Since most people agree with fast food,it tends to grow more rapidly.

Sports are the base of my life, next to my mother who raised me when my dad left us. I have been into sports since I was six years old. I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play.
When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski. I thought I was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before. I showed up to the tryouts and put out about 90% effort since I thought I'd make it with no problem. That was a big mistake.
Brian Pawloski is the hardestworking coach I have ever met. He didn't expect 100% effort; he expected 200% effort. One example: he once made us do 40 suicide drills for the 40 layups (投篮) we missed in a game. Some think this is crazy, but it isn't. After this conditioning practice, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, “coach, that was the best practice I ever had.” I was completely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball, I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand life's challenges, including Wooden, Coach, and The Screwtape Letters. In the first two years I slacked_off,_not putting forth my full potential. Now, unlike the coaches of my youth, this man was interested in how he did off the court. He always made sure I p with my studies and was able to be trusted. I can honestly say that no other coach has given me so much advice on how to succeed in basketball, but more importantly, in life. My school is lucky to have such a great person to teach, coach and influence their students. I will always remember my highschool basketball days as one of the hardest times I have ever worked in my life not only in basketball but in my growth as an individual.

Should doctors ever lie to benefit their patient—to speed recovery or to cover the coming of death? In medicine as in law, government, and other lines of work, the requirements of honesty often seem dwarfed (变矮小)by greater needs:the need to protect form brutal news or to uphold a promise of secrecy;to advance the public interest.
What should doctors say,for example,to a 46yearold man coming in for a routine physical checst before going on vacation with his family who, though he feels in perfect health,is found to have a form of cancer that will cause him to die within six months? Is it best to tell him the truth? If he asld the doctors reject that he is ill,or minimize the gravity of the illness?Should they at least hide the truth until after the family vacation?
Doctors face such choices often. At times, they see important reasons to lie for the patient's own sake;in their eyes, such lies sharply form selfserving ones.Studies show that most doctors sincerely believe that the seriously ill patients do not want to know the truth about their condition, and that informing them risks destroying their hope,so that they may recover more slowly,or deteriorate (恶化)faster, perhaps even commit suicide (自杀).
But other studies show that, contrary to the belief of many physicians;a great majority of patients do want to be told the truth, even about serious illness, and feel cheated when they learn that they have been misled. We are also learning that truthful information, humanely conveyed (传达),helps patients cope with illness:help them tolerate pain better, need less medicine, and even recover faster after surgery.
There is urgent need to debate this issue openly. Not only in medicine, but in other profession as well, practitioners may find themselves repeatedly in difficulty where serious consequences (后果)seem avoidable only through deception(欺骗).Yet the public has every reason to know professional deception, for such practices are peculiarly likely to become deeply rooted,to spread, and to trust.Neither in medicine, nor in law, government,or the social sciences can there be comfort in the old saying,“What you don't kn
