It happened to me recently.I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President.A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was ,in his words, “a brilliantly(精彩地)written book”.However, he then went on to talt Mr Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his bacnd at all.I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.
And it seems that my friend is not the only one.Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven't.In the World Book Day's “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father  is at number 9.The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I'm not one to lie too often (I'd hate to be caught out ),I'll admit here and now that I haven't read the entire top ten.But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the boomber one, George Orwell's 1984.I think it's really brilliant.
The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it.It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky(I haven't read him, but haven't lied about it either )and Herman Melville.
Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to.This could be tricky if the conversation became more indepth!

If you are trying to achieve big goals in your life and work, the chances are that, from time to time, you hit rock bottom. Nothing works, nothing goes right, and nothing succeeds. At times like these, you may feel like throwing_in_the_towel. But before you do, read the following story. It might just change your mind.
One day, a small business owner decided he'd had enough. Enough of the endless worgh of the lack of response, enough of the disturbing loneliness.
He went into the woods to have one last talk to the wise man. “Mr. wise man,” he said. “Can you give me one good reason why I shouldn't give up?”
The answer took him by surprise. “Loond you,” the wise man said. “Do you see the fern (蕨类植物)and the bamboo?”
  “Yes”, the man replied.
“When I planted the fern and the bamboo, I took very good care of them. I gave them both equal amounts of food and water. I gave them sunlight in spring and protected them from the storms in autumn. The fern quickly grew from the earth. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not give up on the bamboo. In the second year, the fern grew even better than before but nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not give up on the bamboo. In year three there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not give up. In year four, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed. Still would not give up.”

After achieving a 9 percent GDP growth, hosting a successful Olympic Games and carrying out its first space wal'd think China would be happy. Yet China is not pleased. That, at least, is the opinion of a new book written by a group of Chinese authors.
China Is Not Happy was released in March. It is a followup to the 1996 work China Can Say No, a bestseller that complained about the influence of the West, and the US in particular, on China. Thirteen years later, the authors of China Is Not Happy list their dissatisfaction with_how_China_is_being_treated_in_the_world_today. They argue that China needs to use its growing power and economic resources to build its own position of outstanding performances. “From looking at the history of human civilization, we are most qualified to lead this world. Westerners should be second,” the book says.
The authors single out the US for special scorn(轻蔑), and say their book's message has been helped by the economic crisis. “This economic problem has shown the Chinese people that America does have problems, and that what we've been saying is right,” said Wang Xiaodong, one of the authors in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
Since released on March 13, the book has become a bestseller in many Chinese bookstores. The publisher has printed 270,000 copies, and says sales are far better than expected.

When Abraham Lincoln was young, he worked in a store. One day a woman came into the store and bought some things. They added up to two dollars and six and a quarter cents.
The bill was paid, and the woman was entirely satisfied. But the young storekeeper, not feeling quite sure as to the accuracy of his calculations, added up the things again. To his surprise he found that it should have been but two dollars.
“ I've made her pay six and a quarter cents more, ”said Abe, disturbed.
It was an unimportant thing, and many clerld have forgotten it, but Abe was too conscientious for that.
“ The money must be paid back, ”he decided.
At night, he closed the store, and walked to the home of his customer. He explained the matter, paid over the six and a quarter cents, and returned satisfied.
Here is another story of young Lincoln's strict honesty. A woman entered the store and asked for half a pound of tea. The young clerk weighed it out. This was the last sale of the day.
The next morning, when beginning his duties, Abe discovered a fourounce weight on the scales. It flashed upon him at once that he had used this in the sale of the previous night, and so, of course, given his customers short weight. I am afraid that there are many country merchants who would not have been much worried by this discovery. But Abe weighed out the balance of the half pound, shut up the store, and carried it to the defrauded customer. I thinng readers will begin to see that the name so often given, in later times to President Lincoln, of “Honest Old Abe, ”was well deserved. A man who begins by strict honesty in his youth is not likely to change as he grows older, and mercantile honesty is some guarantee of political honesty.
