Burmese pythons (缅甸蟒蛇) are some of the biggest snakes in the world and also one of the biggest problems in Florida's wetlands. So state officials have asnters to lend a hand.
The pythons are originally from Asia. Brought to the US as pets or zoo animals, some were released or broke free into the wild and found Florida's warm weather to be perfect for a new settlement. It is estimated that tens of thousands now live in the everglades and the state's marshy wetlands.
These supersies are invasive species. "The problem is with animals," says Carli Segelson, spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. " The pythons eat native birds, reptiles, and small mammals, many of which are threatened species. " Since the python moved in, several native species, such as bobcats and rabbits, have largely disappeared from Florida's wetlands:' So the Florida government has invited hunters to assist in solving this severe environmental problem. People will be allowed to hunt pythons around their breeding grounds for one month, starting on January 12.
Officials are even offering cash prizes to whoever kills the most pythons and to whoever kills the longest Burmese pythons. They are hoping the contest will significantly reduce the population of this dangerous invader.
"Our goal is to help get rid of the pythons from the wild, educate the public about the snakes' impact on the Florida ecosystem, and inform them of what impacts non-native pets can have if allowed into the wild, " Segelson said. Experts say it’s unlikely the snakes will ever be removed from the wild in Florida. But they hope to bring the python problem under control and prevent the snakes from doing more harm.

We've all heard the old saying,“Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Don't you believe it?Words are powerful, and they can hurt—a lot. In fact,if you're not careful, you can even hurt yourself,by using the wrong word in your writing.
Recently a friend sent me a copy of an email she received from the customer service department of her credit card company, after she contacted them with a question about her account. She was happy with their positive response. But as I read the email, one line jumped out at me:“In lieu of good customer service...”
Did they really mean they were offering her a few extra reward points instead of good customer service?I doubt it. More likely, what the customer service department meant to say was,“Because good customer service is important to us...” followed by the details of what they were doing to mare she remained a happy customer.
So why didn't the writer say that?I can only guess that perhaps the writer liked the phrase “in lieu of”,thought it sounded more interesting than saying “because”,and so used it—without bothering to check the true meaning.
Have you ever done that?Try to impress others with a big word, only to find out you've used the word incorrectly? It's just the opposite effect, isn't it?You may impress people all right, but it's not the impression you were going for.
When you write, remember to choose your words carefully. People may still disagree with what you say,but they won't be able to dismiss you because you made careless mistakes in how you said it.
1.What's the writer's purpose in giving the saying?
A.To amuse the reader. B.To persuade the reader.
C.To support a conclusion. D.To lead to the topic.
2.It can be inferred that the writer's friend ______.
A.was the manager of the customer service department
B.was the customer of the credit card company
C.emailed a company to complain D.used a phrase incorrectly

Movie studio directors took notice of her and in 1934 she appeared in the film Stand Up and Cheer! and her song and dance caught people’s attention. Movies such as Little Miss Marker and Bright Eyes featured her signature song. In 1935, she received a special Oscar for her “outstanding contribution to screen entertainment” in the movie Stand Up and Cheer!
She made some 40 feature movies, including The Little Colonel, Poor Little Rich Girl, Heidi and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, in 10 years, starring with big-name actors like Randolph Scott, Lionel Barrymore and Jimmy Durante. Temple was a superstar before the term was invented. She said she was about 8 when crowds shouting their love for her made her realize she was famous. “I wondered why,” she recalled. “I asked my mother and she said, ‘Because your films make them happy.’ ”
Her child career came to an end at 12. She tried a few roles as a teenager—including opposite future president Ronald Reagan in That Hagen Girl – but retired from the screen in 1949 at 21.
Temple was only 17 when she married for the first time to John Agar, who would eventually appear with her in two movies. Their five-year marriage produced a daughter. In 1950 she wed Charles Black in a marriage that lasted until his death in 2005. She and Black had two children. Temple’s interest in politics was sparked in the early 1950s when her husband was called back into the Navy to work in Washington.
1.For which movie did Shirley Temple win the Oscar?
