  Module 1 Unit 1 Friendship
  Period 1 Warming up & Reading
  Teaching objectives:
  The students will be able to
  1. understand the reason why Anne made her diary her best friend.
  2. use some reading skills(skimming and scanning) to help themselves to
  understand the text correctly.
  Teaching content:
  The text “ Anne’s best friend”
  Teaching procedure:
  Part I. Warming up
  Step I. Help the students focus on the topic “friendship” by asking some questions:
  Q1: You have left your old school and come to this new school. Do you miss your friends and do you want to make new friends here? ( yes)
  Q2: How do you think a good friend should be? (brainstorm and discuss in groups in one minute)
  be + adj. (possible answers: honest; beautiful; good; believable; )
  A good friend should
  do (possible answers: help me when I am in trouble;  have the same
  hobby with me;)
  Step II. Deal with the survey on P1.
  Are you good to your friends? Do the survey on page 1. Add up your score and see how many points you get.
  Step III. Lead in the reading material on P2.
  Q: Do you think only human beings can be good friends?
  What else can be good friends?( possible answers: dogs, books, computers; volleyball…)
  Part II. Reading
  Step I. Pre-reading
  1. Help the students to observe the reading material in a whole.
  Q: How many parts is the reading material made up of? (A passage and some pictures: a passage with a title, two paragraphs and a diary; four pictures.)
  2. Help the students predict according to the title.
  Q1: What is the title?
  Anne’s best friend
  Q2: Who is Anne?      Q3: Who was her best friend?
  Step II. Fast reading
  Skim the whole text in 2 minutes and ask the students to check if their prediction is right or wrong.
  Step III. Detailed reading
  1. Read Para 1 and answer the questions:
  Q1: What kind of friend did Anne Frank want?
  Answer: a friend whom you could tell everything to, lir deepest feelings and thoughts. (老师可以训练学生回到原文找依据,划出答案的位置)
  Q2: Why did Anne choose diary as her best friend? Why couldn’t she find a person that she also could share the deepest feelings with? We are going to know the reason in Para 2. (过渡到下一段)
  2. Read Para 2 and answer the question:
  Q: Why did Anne choose the diary as her best friend?
  (在讲解答案的时候,老师可以适当穿插背景知识)
  Time: The World War II
  Where : in Amsterdam in the Netherlands            Anne had to hide away and didn’t dare
  What kind of people: Jewish
