I'd been thinking of it so long; it seemed like the only thing to do-to show my baby, who had eyes as green as water and whose name means the sea, the ocean.
"Babies are supposed to instinctually know who they daddy is," Gerald, Dooriya's daddy, said, holding Dooriya before him."But she don't recognize nothing."
Everybody had something to say about raising my baby, but none of them actually did any raising.Taking Dooriya to see the ocean had become the only thing that kept me from feeling like my life was an everlasting losing race, this vision of what could be for my little girl. When I told Momma about my plans to visit the lighthouse(灯塔)at Cape Hatteras, she just spun her broken record.
A dog who chewed off his owner’s infected toe(脚趾)while he was passed-out drunk has been called a lifesaver. Jerry Douthett had been out drinking when his dog Kiko bit off a large part if his big toe. His wife, Rosee, rushed him to hospital where tests showed the 48-year-old musician had dangerous high blood-sugar levels. Doctors told him his toe would have had to be cut off anyway.
Mr Douthett said he had refused to get medical advice despite his toe being swollen for months. “I was hiding it from people, Rosee included,” he said. “It smelled , and I look back now and realize every time we’d visit someone with a dog, their dog would smell all over my foot.”
The night before Mr Douthett had agreed to see a doctor, he passed out at home after going out  I'd been thinking of it so long; it seemed like the only thing to do-to show my baby, who had eyes as green as water and whose name means the sea, the ocean.

A DECADE after terror struck America, we are starting to move forward.
It has been 10 years. In those awful days right after 9/11, I asked my colleague, Dave Barry, if he thought he would ever write jokes again .He was then the humor columnist for the Miami Herald."For the last week," he told me, "I haven't even tried to write anything funny, and for a while I thought maybe I never would, or should."
He had it; we all had it—that feeling of being stucnable to find your way back to the life you had lived before.I wrote 10 columns in a row about what I had seen, the planes crashing, the ives lost. Finally, I had to force myself to write a column about something that was not terror. That last one column. Then I went right back to what was now normal.
That was a decade ago.Today's terrors become tomorrow's memories .News becomes history.
And I find myself remembering how I used to kill ants when I was a child. The thing that truck me  While watching the Olympics the other night, I came across an unbelievable sight. It was not a gold medal, or a world record brot a show of courage.
The event was swimming and started with only three men on the blocks. For one reason or another, two of them false started, so they were disqualified. That left only one to complete. It would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to race against, even though the time on the clock is important.
I watched the man dive off the block and knew right away that something was wrong.I'm not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold — his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle. The crowd started to laugh.Clearly this man was not a medal competitor.
I listened to the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back.It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes and you could tell he was worn out.
Are some people born clever and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to say that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we Singing are the pupils of the remote Beau-Roc primary school in Haiti. One of them plays a guitar made from an empty oil tin. Their headmistress, Emile Jean-Noel, is one of the few women school principals in the country.
Over 70 % of Haitian population live below the poverty line with inadequate food, water, schools, or housing. To reduce the hunger that prevents learning and to encourage parents to send their children to school, meals are provided by the World Food Programme.
“We are so cut off we have many difficulties,” comments Emile, adding that finding chalk, school books and other materials is practically impossible. Emile tries to encourage those around her to mase of all available resources. Her efforts are bearing fruit. One of her successes was convincing local women to contribute to their children’s schooling and increase their own income by selling embroidery(刺绣) and other handicrafts.
Recent political instability has meant that the country has not invested in education for ten years. A
As China’s women’s gymnastics team enjoyed the glory of winning the country’s first team Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the young gymnasts took the opportunity to remind the world that they are old enough to compete.
Weeks before the Beijing Games, some international media raised questions about the ages of some of the members of China‘s gymnastics team, particularly He Kexin and Jiang Yuyuan. They said the girls might be younger than 16.the minimum age for the Olympics. But the Chinese Gymnastics Association quickly provided copies of the gymnasts’ ID cards and passports, proving they are indeed old enough to compete.
In the final. He Kexia gave a clean performance on her favorite uneven bars(高低杠),earning the second highest score.after falling from the bars during qualification.”Although I fell down in the qualification。I became more confident today to map for my mistake.and I finally made it.”She said.It was a great moment for head coach Lu Shanzhen.“Our team made history today and proved to the world that we are the best.“the coach said.”The gold medal is not only for the gymnastics team, but also for the whole Chinese delegation at the Beijing Games.’’
VINCOUVER (Reuters)——South Korea' s na can finally relax and does fiot need to thint the future after she won the gold medal in the women' s figure skating (花样滑冰)on Thursday.
The 19-year-old was the overwhelming (压倒性的)favorite to finish top of the podium (颁奖台) but said the pressure going into the event was large.
"I feel now as if a huge burden has been lifted, " the Games' highest-earning female athlete-she makes an estimated $8 million a year —said after her near-perfect program where she nailed all of her 11 jumps.
"I will enjoy this moment and thint things later.I was just thrilled on the podium and I feel so relieved.I had been running toward this dream of the Olympics and was so happy to be here, " she said.
"Since I have achieved the most important goal in my life.I am going to enjoy this moment for The year 2009 is the Year of Ox. The ox is a representative of the farming culture of China. In the farming economy , oxen are the major animals pulling plows (犁).
Of course, the good of oxen is not limited to plowing. In fact, they are seen as "boats on land" for their ability to carry loads. Besides, the whole body of an ox is full of treasures. Their meat and milk are food full of nutrition, and their skin can be used to make clothes and shoes. With all these qualities, oxen are regarded as generous creatures.
In the past, oxen played an important role in the spiritual life of the Chinese. Even today, oxen still play a special part in some folk activities. For example, some people who 1ive in southwest China will cook cattle bone soup and share it among family members when holding the ceremony for children who reach 13. They believe that the cattle bone soup represents the blood relationship among family members. In order to express their love for oxen, people in some other areas will run Mr. Whitson taught sixth-grade science. On the first day of class, he gave us a lecture about an animal called the Cattywampus, a nocturnal (夜间活动的) animal that was wiped out during the Ice Age. He passed around a skull as he talked. We all took notes and later had a quiz.
When he returned my paper, I was shocked. There was a big red “X” through each of my answers. There had to be some mistakes! I had written down exactly what Mr. Whitson said. Then I realized that everyone in the class had failed. What had happened? Very simple, Mr. Whitson explained. He had made up all that story about the Cattywampus. The information in our notes was, therefore, incorrect. Did we expect credit for incorrect answers? Needless to say, we were outraged. What kind of text was this? And what kind of teacher is he?
People like to celebrate when they move into a new home. Maybe it’s the first flat someone has owned,a couple’s first home since getting married or maybe a growing family has moved to a bigger house. For whatever reason, the home is new. It represents a change and an exciting new beginning, with walls to paint, rooms to decorate and neighbors to meet. And what better way to meet people than to throw a party?
Parties to celebrate moving into a new home are called "house一warming" or“flat一warming" parties. If you thint it,they,re appropriate names because an empty house with no people or furniture in it is a cold shell of a place. A house full of If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, toop of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of“early bilinguals”who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Very old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who comes into touch with them.Their values---this can not be repeated too often--aren’t necessarily our values.Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a room with rotten food covered by small worms, and an old person lying alone on bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interrupting personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we’re in danger of carrying this idea of personal freedom to the point where serious risks(冒险)are being taken with the health and safety of the old.
Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The old is like a car: it needs more mechanical repair as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to provision of spare parts. But never forget We’ve all met with something that slows us down, for example, the bumps(颠簸) in the road, the setbac just have to keep in mind that a setback is only temporary and greater things lie ahead. Therefore, keep moving forward, developing what you have, since you’ve already built a solid foundation on which you can rely.
It is easy just to quit, give up and ignore the hard wor have put into something. But we believe in the “two steps forward, one step back” philosophy. So how can you react when something doesn’t turn out as you’ve expected it to be?
First, be objective. Step back and look at the situation. Is your setback really that significa
