   Teaching objectives:
  On finishing the lesson, the students will be able to
  1) learn new words through reading
  2) develop the Ss’ reading skills (skimming, scanning and understanding the title)
  3) learn from the composers’ spirits (eg: No pain, no gain./Never give up)
   Important points in teaching:
  1) Understand the passage structure through choosing the best title.
  2) Know something about three world-famous composers and get positive power from them.
   Difficult point in teaching:
  Use what they have learnt to say something about the three great composers.
   Teaching methods:
  Communicative Language Teaching and Task-based Teaching.
   Teaching aids:
  Multimedia, a blackboard.
   Teaching Procedure:
  Step 1 Leading-in (2min)
  1) Greet the Ss and welcome the teachers.
  2) Listen to a piece of music composed by Beethoven and ask the Ss questions.
  3) Show some names of musicians and pictures of three great composers
  ★ Purposes of design: To activate the bacnd knowledge of composers that the Ss have known.
  Step 2 Pre-reading (4min)
  1) Learn some new words
  Correct the Ss’ pronunciation and ask them to finish the exercises.

  Step 3 While-reading (14min)
  1. Fast reading (2+1=3min)
  Read the passage quickly and choose the best title.
  A. Three Great Austrian Composers
  B. Three Great Composers of the Eighteenth Century
  C. Three Great Child Composers
  ( Key: B)
  2. Careful reading (3+5+3=11min)
  Read the passage carefully and finish the exercises for each part shown on ppt.
  1) Read paragraphs 1-2 about Haydn and finish the exercises. (3min)
  1. Where was he born?    ( A )    
  A. Austria   B. Australia   C. Germany
  2. Use “T”(True) or “F”(False) to judge the statements.
  (1) Joseph Haydn is known as “the father of the symphony”                ( T  )
  (2) Joseph Haydn’s father was a musician and orchestra conductor.           ( F  )
  2)Read paragraphs 3-5 about Mozart and finish the two tasks. (5min)
  Task 1: Match the time with connected information.

  3.when he was a teenager          C.Composed many pieces for the harpsichord, piano and violin
  Task 2: Answer the questions
  1. How many pieces of music did Mozart compose?

  2.How old was he when he played for the Empress of Austria?
  He was six years old.
  3)Read paragraphs 6-8 about Beethoven and answer the questions. (3min)
  1.Who taught Beethoven how to play the piano?
  His father taught him.
