  Unit 4 Lesson 3 Virtual Reality
  Analysis of the text
  This lesson is about virtual reality. By studying of this lesson, we’ll enable the students to know the serious attitude towards scientific progress and develop an interest in technology. This lesson plays an important role in the English learning and teaching in this unit, as it is the main passage in this unit which outlines the theme of this unit. If the students can learn it well, it will be helpful to make them learn the rest of this unit. This text is a dialogue between two students, Tom and Cathy, talking about virtual reality. Because they are future of the world and thus they surely will show a greater interest in the topic, I have an intention to give my students a chance to present the class on their own.
  Analysis of the students
  In this period, students have cultivated various interests, including reading boot literature or scientific researches. Besides, they have commanded a number of words and expressions and show interests in learning English. Through the introduction of virtual reality, their reading interests can be motivated. And as we all know, reading belongs to the input during the process of language learning. The input has great effect on output, such as speaking and writing. Hence it is beneficial for students’ speaking and writing abilities.
  Teaching Objectives
  Knowledge Objectives
  1. Students would be able to get the general meaning of the passage.
  2. Students would be curious about virtual reality and study hard to get more information about it.
  Ability Objectives
  1. To develop reading strategies for digging up some specific information from the reading text.
  2. To enable students to know the basic steps of reading and put it into use in the following study.
  3. To enable students to talt virtual reality by discussing, interviewing or debating.
  Emotion Objectives
  1. To develop scientific consciousness by the introduction of virtual reality.
  2. To inspire students’ independence and imagination;
  3. To motivate students’ caring for the future of the world;
  4. To cultivate students’ ability of organization and the sense of cooperation.
  Teaching important points
  1. Help the students to understand the passage better, identify different kinds of virtual reality and talt its applications.
  2. Help the students to understand the details of the text and get students to learn different reading skills.
  Teaching difficult points
  1. How to help the students improve their reading ability and understand the passage better.
  Teaching Methods
  (1) Task-based language teaching
  A task resembles activities which our students or other people carry out in everyday life. Learners should be given opportunities to reflect on what they have learned and how well they are doing.
  (2) Communicative language teaching
  Language is used for communication. It’s learner-centered and emphasizes on communications and real-life situation.
  (3) Computer assisted language teaching
  Language learning needs a context, which can help the learners to understand the language and then can produce comprehensible output, so computer has the advantages to make the materials attractive.
  Learning Methods
  Although the students have the basic abilities of learning, speaking, reading and writing, they still need many opportunities to practice what they have learned and to develop their autonomous learning ability and cooperative learning ability. As students are poor in cooperative learning skill, many students are not active in class, and even some of them don’t like English. Therefore, I’ll have students study in a relaxed atmosphere. The learning process of students is from seeing, thinking, saying. So after feeling and understanding the content of the lesson, I will let the students get the knowledge actively by cooperative study. In a word, I will:
  1. Let the students pass observation-imitation practice to study language;
  2. Teach the students how to master dialogues and how to communicate with others.
