There is fresh water in rain, in rivers and wells. This fact leads us to think that fresh water is everywhere and it will never be used up in the world. But the fact is that such a belief is unfortunately wrong and possibly dangerous.
According to the World Water Council, 1.1 billion people are currently living without clean drinking water. Most of the people facing water shortages are in developing countries -- where it's not uncommon for women to walk for miles to find water -- but not all of them. By the year 2050, some 4 billion people which is over half of the entire world's population will be facing serious water shortages. In the United States, people living in Southwestern states like Arizona could be facing severe freshwater shortages even sooner -- by 2025.
This may seem strange to you, since nearly 70 percent of the earth's surface is covered with water. But about 97 percent of this huge amount is seawater, or salt water. Man can only drinse the other 3 percent——the fresh water that comes from rivers, landerground, and other sources. Second, with the expansion(扩张)of world population and development of industry, the amount of the fresh water needed is increasing rapidly. It is estimated that if such a trend continues, the fresh water on earth will be exhausted very soon. What is worse, more and more water resources are being polluted, making the water unsuitable to use.
