Modern science gives us some rational
explanation, but it too shows us just how
small we really are.
Earthquakes happen because on a vast and low
scale the entire surface of planet is in motion.
The earth crust is divided in the broad of
pieces called tectonic plates, floating above
the liquid mantel hundreds of miles below.
These tectonic plates are constantly moving,
driven by the convection cruuent of mantel.
The movement is incredibly slow, about half
inch per year, or just about the speed of the
finger nails grow. In some parts of the world
the plates collide, one plate lies under or
past the other. The immense forces push up
the crust forming mountains and volcanos.
95% of all earthquakes happened along the
boundaries between the tectonic plates.
