Women have been making scientific discoveries since ancient times. Twelve women have won the Nobel Prize for Science, one of the highest honors in the world. Some women scientists never married, some worked with their husbands, and others raised large families. It has been difficult for women to be successful scientists.
In the early 1800s in England, Mary Anning became one of the first women recognized for her discoveries about the ancient history of the earth. Mary and her father collected fossils(化石) in their village on the south coast of Great Britain. Fossils are parts of plants or animals that have been saved in rocks for millions of years.
When she was only twelve years old, Mary became the first person to find the almost complete skeletons (骨架) of several animals that no longer existed on the earth. She didn't become famous for her discoveries at that time because she often sold her fossils to get money to support her family.
In 1891, a young Polish woman named Marie Sklodowska traveled to Paris to study physics. She did so because she could not get a college education in Poland. She began working in the laboratory of a man named Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre Curie got married and made many discoveries together. They received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 along with another scientist. Marie Curie became the first person to be awarded a second Nobel Prize in 1911, this time for Chemistry. Marie Curie was one of the few women at the time who became famous as a scientist.

Mother Nature knows best. But she's not always generous with her secrets. Sometimes she only tells them to the most careful observers.
George de Mestral was a Swiss engineer who enjoyed walking with his dog in the woods. One day, after a walk, he looked down and saw some seeds (种子) stuck to his trousers. He was a little bit angry because the seeds were hard to remove. He pulled a few of the seeds off of his trousers and examined them under a microscope (显微镜). What he saw amazed him: tiny hooks (钩子) on the ends of the seeds. George de Mestral saw a new way to stick things together and keep them attached.
He was inspired to turn his accidental discovery into a useful product. He borrowed money from a bank, gave up his job, and gave all of his time and energy to the_task. At first, people refused to take him, and the idea, seriously. He took his idea to a weaving center, where he did manage to get the help of one weaver, who made two products out of cotton that worked. However, the cotton wore out quickly. Finally, by using nylon instead of cotton, he made his invention work. It took ten years to develop it. He called it Velcro.
Today, Velcro is used everywhere: in shoes, purses, and children's toys. We can thank de Mestral for discovering and developing a wonderful way to attach things. But the real thanld go to nature for making the secret known.

Hidden on the edge of Denver's most colorful neighborhoods, the color purple is making a name for itself. It's the color of the front door at The Purple Door coffee shop, a place that does much more than serve coffee and tea.
“It has high value, and so whenever you walgh that door, anyone knows you have worth and value,” said Jenna Williams, who has worked at the coffee shop for one year.
But it's the people behind the counter (柜台) who are benefiting the most from finding their worth and value. The people taking orders and serving coffee were all homeless.
“They've given me so many second chances,” said Jenna, a 23-year-old who had been living on the streets since she was 15. “It's all about love. We're not just a business. We are a family.”
The Purple Door takes in young adults, and gives them a job for one year. It' s a non-profit (非营利机构) that also helps them find a place to live, giving them a chance to re-enter a good life.
It's the brainchild of Madison Chandler and Mard, who opened the coffee shop two years ago.
“The hardest thing about this job for me has been how to balance pushing someone to become better and being patient with them when they fail,”Madison said.
Part of that struggle came last October, when Jenna nearly lost her job. The Purple Door helped Jenna by using a 52-week program.
“It helped me pull away from the bad situation I was in in October,” she said.
The Purple Door has about a 50 percent success rate, though Mark adds that those who have not accomplished the program may still benefit from what they have learned.
Jenna soon got back on track, and recently finished her one-year program, landing a full-time job at the famous coffeehouse Starbucks.
“The Purple Door coffee family gave me the chance no one else would. They understood,” she said. “This program works and it's exactly what ‘Street Kids’ needed.”
