  Unit 5 Canada—“The True North”
  Section Ⅰ Warming Up & Reading-Pre-reading
  Ⅰ.阅读理解
  A
All writers have their own special ways of getting words down-a favourite pen, a special place, even a certain time of day. Five famous writers tell you their secrets.
  Fay Weldon
  British novelist
I get up at seven or eight and then I write until lunchtime. I don't write after lunch. I wrote by pen until about four years ago when I realised that the rest of the world used computers. Although I have a new laptop, I still prefer to use my old computer.
  Michael Morpurgo
  British children's book writer
I had problems some years ago sitting at a desse I got pains in my shoulder, so I decided to write in bed. Now, when I have a story in my head I go to bed with a small notebook and fill it up. I keep my manuscripts (原稿) in the fridge just in case the house burns down.
  John Mortimer
  British novelist
I write in a room that used to be the garage (车库). Now it's full of books and photographs, I write with a soft red pen on a notebook. Each page is almost exactly 300 words long.
  Simon Armitage
  British poet and novelist
I used to be more nocturnal (夜间活动的), but since my daughter was born I try to keep more traditional hours. I have an office just outside the house above the garage where I keep my books and my treasures. I listen to music when I'm writing. I have no love for my computer, although when it's working we are great friends.
  Marina Lewycka
  Ukrainian novelist
I write in bed, partly because it's the most comfortable and private place and partly because I like to write either at the beginning or the end of the day. I drink an amount of tea and I work on a laptop.
