Teaching procedure
Pre-reading preparation
1 Asdents to look at the title, the introduction and the picture on page 2, SB before they read the report. Ask them to try to say whether they agree or disagree with the statements. Ask the students to thint the following statements:
a) The report is probably about a school newspaper.
b) The students in the picture are having a meeting.
c) The students’ hands are up because they want to asestion.
Mare that all the students understand the main idea of the report.
2 Asdents to read the report with the questions in mind.
Asdents the following questions:
a) What did some Grade Eight students at Mayfield School want to do soon after the term started? (They wanted to publish a newspaper.)
b) Who took charge of the meeting? (Joyce.)
c) How many students attended the meeting? Who are they? (There are five. They are Lucy, Tony, Joyce, Jessica and Ben.)
d) What was the last question at the meeting? (What should the students call the newspaper?)
e) How soon will the students hold the next meeting? (They will have the next meeting in one week’s time.)
f) Will the students make a decision about the name of the newspaper at the next meeting? (Yes, they will.)
3 Asdents if they know of any other names monly used for newspapers and list them on the board. Ask them to list some reasons why these names might have been chosen. Possible answers may include the following:
Times—(New York/London) The paper gives the information about the times we live in.
Post—(Washington) Originally, post-coaches were the fastest form of transportation. The title tells us that the news is still hot.
Mirror—(UK) A mirror reflects the truth.
Observer—(UK) The paper observes events and ments on them.
4 Asdents to list the different items one can find in a newspaper ( e.g., headlines, letters, world news, local news, editorials, features, sports, advertisements, reviews, business information, TV schedules, weather forecast, horoscopes, ic strips, etc.)
