Biblical idioms
Step 1 : Lead-in (Brainstorm)
Try to guess the meaning of each phrase
〔….the Sunflower Bible
…Grammar Bible
….the Bible of Martial Art
…the Bible of financing
……….〕
Why do these phrases all include the word “Bible”?
Step 2: Brief introduction to the Bible
…..Christian classics
…..known to every family in the western world
….one of the origins of national culture
….a detailed chronicle of the ancient Middle East area especially Jewish
…has a significant impact on Western thought and culture
The stories in the Bible spread far and wide , forming a large number of idioms.
The idioms in the stories are various, vivid, impressive, full of wisdom.
Step 3: Some Biblical idioms collected in dictionaries.
1.be out of the ark / went out with the ark
Origin: a story in Bible. (Noah Ark)
The ark was a large boat which Noah built to save his family and two of every type of animal from the flood.
She was using a dictionary that was straight out of the ark.
(她用的是一本老掉牙的词典)
Meaning : very old, out of date
2. fall by the wayside
Origin: a story in Bible, in which the seeds that fell on the wayside did not grow.
So many would-be slimmers fail to stay the course and fall by the sideway.
(很多想苗条的人没能坚持到底 而中途放弃了)。
Meaning : give away halfway 半途而废
3. forbidden fruit
Origin : the story of Adam and Eve in the Bible, in which Eve ate an apple when she was not allowed to.
He felt very attracted to his friend’s wife, but admitted that she was forbidden fruit.
(他觉得他最好的朋友的老婆很有魅力,可是也承认是不能得到的 )
Meaning : something you can get or do
4.gird up your loins
Origin :picr robe and tie it about your waist so that you could run or move much more quickly
There is a lot of hard work to be done before the weekend, so let us gird up our loins and start。
(周末之前有很多辛苦活要干,我们准备好开始干吧)
Meaning: be prepared to do something tough and act at once.
5. doubting Thomas
Origin:耶稣复活后出现在众人面前,十二门徒之一的托马斯没有亲眼见到,声称除非看到耶稣手上的钉痕,用手探入他的肋旁,否则不信他已复活。
He's a real doubting Thomas ─ he simply wouldn't believe I'd won the car until he saw it with his own eyes.
(他是一个真正的怀疑主义者──在没有亲眼看到之前他就是 不相信我赢得了那辆车。 )
Meaning: a person who is not ready to believe others.
6.a Jobs comforter
Origin: Jobs is a character in the Bible. His friend pretended to comfort him but was actually criticizing him.
Ann came to see me when I was in hospital. She was a real Jobs comforter. She told me about somebody who had the same operation as me, and then died a month later.
(我住院的时候安来看我,谁知道她的安慰使我更难受,她告诉我,有个人做了和我一样的手术,结果一个月后就死了。 )
Meaning: a person who intends to comfort others, but end up upsetting others.
( 增加对方痛苦的安慰者,反叫人添愁的安慰者 )
7.kill the fatted calf
Origin :a story in the bible, in which a father arranged a banquet when his son returned to the family.
My brother is coming home tomorrow, so I expect my parents will be killing the fatted calf for him.
(我哥哥明天回家,我想父母会好好地为他庆祝一翻)
Meaning: hold a banquet to celebrate something or welcome somebody back.
8. Manna from heaven
Origin: Manna was the food the Israelites found in the dessert
