Lesson 17 warm-up & lesson 1
Teaching Aim:
Learn some words and phrases about laughing.
Step 1 Warm up
a. Phrases abo ut laugh:
He who laughs last laughs longest. 看谁笑到最后。
laugh at sb.
laugh in one’s face (公开表示)蔑视某人
laugh like a drain 放声大笑
b. Some funny quotes:
Room service, send me a larger room.
I am not afraid of death I just don’t want to be there when it happens.
Laugh at yourself first before anyone else can.
Step 2 Word-building
Give some pictures to introduce some new words about laugh:
Amused, burst out laughing, falling about laughing, entertained, giggle, sketch, cross talk
Step 3 Listening
Listen to different kinds of laughter and identify the type of them.
Step 4 Phrase-building
Give students several sentences from the typescript to prepare for the second listening.
Step 5 Listening
Listen to the tape and identify the function of each extract.
telling a joke, teasing someone, telling an anecdote, and describing a ridiculous situation.
Step 6 Homework:
Map a story in groups of four by choosing 3-5 from the following words and phrases.

1. amuse
【用法】amuse是动词,意为:①逗乐,逗笑; ②给……带来乐趣,给……提供娱乐(或消遣)。如:
Tony made funny faces to amuse the children.
We need something that will amuse a 7-year-old for an afternoon.
【拓展】amused ad j. 意为“被逗乐的,愉快的”。如:
Catherine shared the joke with an amused smile on her face.
amusing adj. 意为“有趣的,逗笑的”。如:
I don’t find that type of humour very amusing at all.
amusement n. 意为“愉快,开心,娱乐活动”。如:
To my great amusement, someone hid his clothes while he was swimming.
This hotel offers its guests a wide variety of amusements.
【考例】Lucy has a great sense of humour and always keeps her colleagues _____ with her stories. (上海2010)

【点拨】分析句子结构可知,amuse与her colleagues之间是逻辑上的动宾关系,且keep后不跟带不定式的复合结构,故选amused。
2. have difficulty (in) doing sth.
【用法】have difficulty (in) doing sth. 是一个固定搭配,意为“做某事有困难”。如:
Harry had difficulty (in) persuading his mother to buy him the book.
We had no difficulty (in) finding a house in this big city.
【考例】I had great difficulty _____ the suitable food on the menu in that restaurant. (上海2010)

【点拨】have difficulty (in) doing sth. 是固定搭配,故选finding。
3. instead
【用法】
●instead是副词,意为“代替,顶替,取而代之,而不是”。如:
If Rock can’t attend the meeting, I could go instead.
Monica didn’t study law. Instead, she decided to become an actress.
●instead of是介词,意为“代替,而不是”,后跟名词、代词或动词-ing形式。如:
You probably picp my book instead of yours.
I’ll go instead of you.
Can’t we deal with it now instead of waiting until tomorrow?
【考例】The young man couldn’t afford a new car. _____, he bought a used one. (天津2011)

【点拨】题意:这个年轻人买不起新汽车,他就买了辆二手汽车代替。故Instead符合语境。
4. expect
【用法】expect是动词,意为:
①预料, 预计。如:
You would expect that there would be strong disagreement about this.
②期盼,等待。如:
I was expecting a present from her, so I was disappointed I didn’t receive one.
③认为……理应发生,要求。如:
You will be expected to work on Saturdays.
【考例】Duty is an act or a course of action that people _____ you to take by social customs, law or religion.(湖北2010)
